Staff Scientist to manage a Structural Proteomics Facility

Job description

APPLICATION CLOSING DATE: January 31st 2022

A Staff Scientist position in structural proteomics is available at the Human Technopole (HT) in Milan to establish and manage a Structural mass spectrometry (MS) proteomics platform in collaboration with the Department of Experimental Oncology at the European Institute of Oncology (IEO) and the HT Structural Biology Research Centre. Structural proteomics technologies will be integrated with cryo-EM and other experimental approaches, to create a technological platform enabling the determination of the structure of macromolecules and their organization within cells. The platform will be open to HT and IEO users as well as external users

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated person, with a proven track record in high-resolution MS based proteomics, with specific experience in cross-linking (XL) and native- MS. Demonstrated ability in interpersonal communication and collaboration, as well as strong initiative and ability to work independently, launch new projects and drive them forward are essential. Expertise in protein bioinformatics and computational proteomics, especially in software for the analysis of XL-MS data is essential.

The Staff Scientist will be hired by the HT and will carry out their experimental work at the Department of Experimental Oncology of the IEO, where an MS-proteomics platform is already working efficiently and where a critical mass of scientists with proven expertise in quantitative MS-proteomics, interaction proteomics and modification-proteomics is already present. The Staff Scientist will be embedded in this technologically rich environment, where he/she will have to establish biochemical and analytical methods for structural proteomics. The facility will be open to external users under a peer-reviewed prioritising system.

Key tasks and responsibilities:

The Staff Scientist of the Structural Proteomics Facility will:

• be responsible for implementing priorities and resource planning for the facility;

• supervise sample preparation, data collection, evaluation and quality control;

• cooperate with other groups to implement novel technologies;

• ensure the structural proteomics pipelines are world-class;

• manage access charges with periodic review to ensure sustainability

and competitiveness;

• constantly optimise protocols and maximise cost-effectiveness;

• closely follow technological developments that could benefit the Facility;

• interact with the manufacturers and engineers of the relevant equipment;

• organise training and assistance for new users of the Facility;

• prepare for facility reviews by external experts;

• participate actively in the overall development of HT core facilities;

• report regularly on progress to the structural biology user group and its chairs;

• help design and advise IT services to meet Facility and user requirements;

• build effective links and collaborations within HT and IEO;

• support third-party fundraising where possible.

Job requirements

• +5 years of hands-on experience in the use of MS proteomics, in particular XL-MS and native-MS.

• PhD or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject, e.g. molecular biology, biochemistry or a related field of science;

• Documented experience in delivery of MS proteomics projects;

• Experience in sample preparation;

• Experience in protein bioinformatics and computational proteomics ;

• Excellent laboratory skills and trouble-shooting;

• Ability to interact effectively with other teams and work synergistically to drive

projects forward;

• Meticulous organization;
