Post Doctoral position : DISCO beamline (biological imaging)

SOLEIL is the French synchrotron, located on the plateau de Saclay in Paris suburb. It is a multidisciplinary instrument and a research laboratory, whose mission are to conduct research programs using synchrotron radiation, to develop state-of-the-art instrumentation on the beamlines and to make them available to the different scientific communities. The synchrotron SOLEIL, a unique tool for both academic research and industrial applications, opened in 2008. It is used annually by several thousand French and foreign researchers, across a wide range of disciplines such as physics, biology, chemistry, astrophysics, environmental sciences, earth sciences, etc. SOLEIL radiation’s source is remarkable both in terms of brightness and stability. This Very Large Research Infrastructure (TGIR), a partner of the University of Paris-Saclay, is a société civile jointly founded by the CNRS and the CEA.

This position is situated in the DISCO team.

The DISCO beamline, opened in 2009, serves the cell biology, biochemistry, chemistry and heritage science communities in France and Europe. Equipped with three experimental branches for deep ultraviolet fluorescence imaging (DUV), mass spectrometry (APEX) and circular dichroism (SRCD), the DISCO beamline welcomes users from different communities. The DISCO team, under the responsibility of the head of the beamline, is currently composed of 2 scientists, a scientist from INRAE, 1 assistant engineer and 2 post-doctoral fellows, it participates actively in the Heliobio section composed of the biology and health beamlines of SOLEIL.

I.Mission

Under the responsibility of the beamline manager, the post-doctoral fellow will have to develop a research topic in biology under the responsibility of the beamline manager, relying on local collaborations already in place.

Writing results in scientific journal articles, presentation of results at national and/or international conferences (posters or oral presentations).

Participation in scientific conferences related to the research developed, or research prospects.

In parallel, he or she will carry out a half-load of local contact to accompany the scientists of the beamline and will bring his or her know-how in biology to other projects of the Heliobio section.

II.Education and experience

The position is for a person with a PhD in either cell biology/virology with a heavy use of conventional biological imaging tools (fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy, or other) or a PhD in medical imaging with heavy use of tools close to those of the DISCO beamline (epifluorescence, confocal, slide scanners, or other).

  1. In-depth knowledge of a biological imaging technique.
  2. Knowledge in biological image analysis.
