Assistant Professorships in Experimental Quantum Computing with Semiconductors and in Quantum Computing and Quantum Condensed Matter Theory

The Department of Physics at the University of Basel, Switzerland invites applications for two tenure-track assistant professorships. The University of Basel is “”Leading House”” in the NCCR (National Centre of Competence in Research) project “”SPIN: Spin Qubits in Silicon””. NCCR SPIN, a research initiative within Switzerland, was approved in December 2019 and will start its activities in summer, 2020. SPIN aims to develop elements of scalable quantum computer technology, focussing on electron and hole spin qubits in silicon and germanium. Linked to NCCR SPIN, two new tenure-track assistant professorships have been created at the Department of Physics, University of Basel, one in experimental physics, the other in quantum condensed matter theory. More detail on SPIN is available from the Swiss Science Foundation (http://www.snf.ch/en/researchinFocus/nccr/spin) and from the department’s own web-site (https://www.quantum.unibas.ch/nccr-spin).

Your position
The new professors should make vital and original contributions to the activities of NCCR SPIN and to the department’s activities in quantum science, they should provide leadership in research, and they should contribute to teaching at both Bachelor’s and Master’s levels.

Your profile
Candidates should hold a PhD and demonstrate an excellent track-record in quantum science and quantum technology.

We offer you
The Department of Physics of the University of Basel offers an international environment to pursue cutting-edge research in quantum science and quantum computing. The facilities in the department, complemented by those of the Swiss Nanoscience Institute, are excellent. The University of Basel is an equal opportunity and family friendly employer committed to excellence through diversity.

Application / Contact
Applications (a short letter of motivation, a curriculum vitae, a publication list, a statement (approximately two pages) on research and teaching plans) should be addressed to Prof. Dr. Martin Spiess, Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Basel, Klingelbergstrasse 50, 4056 Basel, Switzerland, and submitted to https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/16361 (experimental position) or https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/16362 (theory position). Candidates should arrange for three to five reference letters to be submitted to the same site.

For informal inquiries please contact the Chair of the Department Professor Martino Poggio (Martino.Poggio@unibas.ch) or the NCCR SPIN Directors, Professors Richard J. Warburton (Richard.Warburton@uniba.ch), Daniel Loss (Daniel.Loss@unibas.ch), and Jelena Klinovaja (Jelena.Klinovaja@unibas.ch).

Screening of complete dossiers will start on 1st August 2020. Complete applications received at a later date will be considered as long as possible.
