Dalai Lama Fellowship program 2020

Dalai Lama Fellows, founded in 2010 with the authorization and involvement of the 14th Dalai Lama, is reimagining leadership by cultivating and supporting a global movement of next generation leaders applying universal values to solve global challenges.  The program is independent, secular and ecumenical.

They award year-long Fellowships to such next generation leaders that are working on social change projects in local communities to address one or more of the following areas: mitigating economic disparity, diminishing violence, gender inequity, improving cross-cultural and interreligious cooperation, facilitating new and more holistic educational approaches, and enhancing environmental sustainability.

We provide each Project Fellow with:

  • Immersion in our distinctive yearlong Head, Heart, Hands leadership curriculum.
  • One-on-one coaching to support their projects in social change and personal development as contemplative and collaborative leaders.
  • Participation in two week-long Global Assembly with Fellows from around the world and dynamic faculty; and Life Long affiliation in our global learning community and support system.

Program Period

One year

  • March 2020 (date TBD): Fellows are selected and notified.

  • April-May, 2020: Virtual on-boarding of new Fellow.

  • June 2020 (date TBD): 5-day Contemplative Leadership Assembly in United States.

  • July 2020-May 2021: Head, Heart, Hands curriculum, monthly coaching calls, small group learning calls, project implementation in local communities.

  • June 2021 and beyond: Fellows complete program and enter LifeLong Fellows global leadership and learning community.

Eligibility Requirements (Criteria)

In order to fulfill the minimum requirements, a candidate must demonstrate the following through the application:

  • Be a next generation leader who is between 20-35 years old*

  • Fluency in written and spoken English

  • Experience or interest in learning and practicing contemplative practices throughout the year

  • Current engagement (or well-articulated plans) for a social change project in one’s local community and sustained engagement throughout the fellowship year

  • Possess in-depth knowledge of the community and the issue that the project is seeking to address, preferably with at least one year of previous experience working with the community

  • Commitment to participate in our online learning platform, coaching calls, etc.

  • Attendance at the Contemplative Leadership Assembly in mid-June 2020 (Dalai Lama Fellows will cover all travel, lodging, and meals for the assembly)

*Candidates must be between 20-35 years old on Jan. 5, 2020. This is a firm age range, and due to the high volume of applications and the fellowship’s focus on next generation leaders, we are currently unable to make exceptions.

Second Step: 

The application for Dalai Lama Fellows consists of six major parts:

  •  Your Resume/CV.
  • your latest unofficial academic transcript (an academic transcript is a record of your coursework and grades)
  •  Applicant Background and Overview.
  •  One Letter of Recommendation.
  •  Essay Questions.
  •  Application Video.

Third Step: 

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION:

Be AuthenticAs you reflect on and respond to these questions, remember not to tell us what you think we want to hear. Be authentic with yourself and share that authenticity with our team.

Be CourageousThis application is an opportunity to reflect on how you can grow as a leader. Be courageously bold, imagine the kind of leader you can become, and tell us about it.

Be Thoughtful: Take time to respond to each question. Save drafts. Share reflections with trusted friends and colleagues. The most successful applications are not only well written but demonstrate thoughtfulness and introspection.

Save an Offline CopyWe recommend that you first reiew the entire application form and then spend time offline composing your responses in Google Docs or Microsoft Word. Be sure to save an offline copy in case of a technological error or broken connection.

Forth Step:  Create a 1-2 minute video of yourself that responds to the following prompt:

“Beyond formal education and training, in what ways do you continue to grow as a leader and a human being?” Please provide at least one current example from your life to demonstrate your growth. (Maximum 2 minutes)
* email this video to contemplativeleadership@virginia.edu and write “(YOUR NAME) 2020 DLF APPLICATION” in the subject line. Uploading your video to Google Drive, making it viewable to anyone who has the link, and emailing the link to us is a good way to share the video. Alternatively, you can upload your video to Youtube and email the link to us.
YOUR APPLICATION WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED COMPLETE UNTIL THIS VIDEO IS RECEIVED.

Fifth Step: We require one character reference from someone who has been a witness to your journey, who can describe your personal exploration in leadership, and who can speak to your commitment and perseverance. This form must be completed and submitted online.
