For more than 50 years, Ashinaga has provided educational support and emotional care to orphaned students from around the world. Over 500 interns from more than 90 universities worldwide have helped us to continue this mission, interning in a variety of fields within our organisation.
Whether supporting our Ashinaga Africa Initiative Scholars at our Uganda or Senegal study camps or aiding our Japanese scholars’ activities or marketing campaigns from our Tokyo HQ, intern with us to gain practical skills and experience working in an international NGO!
Japan
Our Japan-based interns work a variety of different teams at our HQ in Tokyo or our Tokyo or Kobe Kokorojuku dormitories. Interns work five days a week and are guided through their projects by a dedicated team supervisor, simultaneously gaining transferable skills and an insight into working at an international NGO.
Interns live in the Tokyo Kokoro-Juku or Kobe Kokoro-Juku dormitories, where they can see the real-world impact their work has whilst fostering invaluable relationships with Ashinaga scholars from Japan and sub-Saharan Africa.
In addition to general team-based projects, interns will participate in our Tohoku Program. This program will allow interns to visit our Sendai Rainbow House facility and learn about Ashinaga’s activities in the Tohoku Region, tour areas affected by the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, hear testimonials from those affected and see the reconstruction efforts in Tohoku first-hand.

Intern Teams in Japan
Translation
- Providing translations for our various offices into English, Japanese, French, and/or Portuguese.
Marketing
- Maintaining and managing the communities of our various social networks
- Aiding the creation of short documentaries and videos to expand our outreach and initiatives.
Student Relations (SRT)
- Providing support to our international students currently living in Japan.
Professional Network Development (PND)
- Working to expand our network in Sub-Saharan Africa, including maintaining our relationships with local ambassadors and providing career support for our Ashinaga Africa Initiative Scholars
Undouka (Student Activities)
- Working with our Japanese Ashinaga scholars to help plan and execute our annual summer camps and fundraising events whilst promote a more global atmosphere at our student activities in Japan.
Internship
- Developing a community of internship alumni to facilitate Ashinaga’s international expansion and to raise awareness of our activities outside of Japan.
Kenjin-Tatsujin
- Working with the Office of the Kenjin-Tatsujin International Advisory Council to oversee and manage the relationships on the council. The council includes VIPs such as ex-prime ministers, internationally acclaimed artists, and sitting politicians.
Uganda
The Ashinaga African Initiative (AAI) aims to contribute to Sub Saharan Africa’s expanding role in global development by improving access to higher education abroad to orphans. Interns working with Ashinaga in Uganda have the unique opportunity to mentor and teach more than 20 very gifted AAI students, each from a different country in Sub-Saharan Africa. These students are ambitious high school graduates, selected by Ashinaga to receive a full scholarship for a university degree abroad. The students have been specifically chosen because they have lost one or both of their parents and have shown potential for leadership.
Successful candidates from across Sub-Saharan Africa travel to Uganda to participate in a program designed to prepare them for studying and living abroad. This preparation begins with a Study Camp (July to December), following which the candidates travel home before returning to Uganda to undergo Preparation Camp (May-June). The three core goals which underpin both camps are:
- Enhancing academic performance,
- Applying and gaining entry into university
- Develop core leadership skills.
Intern Expectations
As an intern for Ashinaga Uganda, your primary responsibility will be teaching, including planning your lessons, in accordance with our curriculum. The lessons you teach will be based around the preferences indicated in your application and during your interview, although you may be asked to teach additional subjects, relevant to our students, such as Study Skills or Practical Writing. Your working hours will be 8:45am-5pm, with lunch from 1pm-2pm. You can expect to teach between 10-16 lessons/hours per week with the rest of the time allocated to lesson planning and student interaction.
For interns during Study Camp (Cohorts 1 and 2) a key factor to consider when teaching, is preparing candidates for standardized international entrance exams, such as SAT, IELTS and SAT II’s.
Depending on your nationality, or your country of study, interns also assist the Program Coordinators in the candidates’ application processes. During Prep Camp this will revolve around creating informative sessions which introduce, in detail, practical, cultural and historical aspects of each destination country; as well as interview preparation, where necessary.
Interns during Study Camp can expect to be more involved with the university application process itself. Under the supervision of the Camp Team, interns will assist and guide students through researching (Cohort 1) and applying (Cohort 2) to university and, where appropriate, offer advice on things such as personal statements and essays.

Senegal
Ashinaga Senegal welcomes bilingual interns speaking French and English to participate in its internship program based in Dakar. With internship durations ranging between two and four months, interns are given the opportunity to play an integral role in Ashinaga Senegal’s diverse range of activities.
All interns are given the opportunity to work on research and practice-based projects in support of Ashinaga Senegal’s activities, with the internship program principally focusing on finding a team of interns to mentor and teach ambitious students each selected from a different country in francophone Sub-Saharan Africa and dedicated to have a positive impact in their community of origin after their studies.
The Ashinaga students participating in our Francophone camps spend several months in Dakar preparing to study at and applying for universities in France, Japan, the UK and the US, while also developing the leadership skills, self-confidence, and ambition necessary to return to their home countries as experts in their respective fields.
As part of this process, interns are principally tasked with developing and teaching an academic curriculum, coordinating extracurricular leadership activities, and providing support and guidance during the university application process through individual mentoring sessions with students.
Additionally, interns could be asked to participate in Ashinaga Senegal’s networking activities as we seek to raise awareness and develop links with organisations in Dakar and across francophone Africa.
Interns are expected to work in varied roles within Ashinaga Senegal, and we are therefore looking for dedicated, versatile, and capable applicants from a range of academic and cultural backgrounds. All interns should be fluent French and English speakers, with a good understanding of the higher education systems being highly advantageous.
Interns work from Monday to Friday in our office in the heart of Dakar, with accommodation, insurance, flights and weekday breakfast and lunch. In addition, a weekly stipend covering basic living costs is provided.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I apply?
You can apply for our Internship Programs via the online application forms above. These are usually released in late November; please check our website and social media pages for updates.
Are program dates flexible? What is the minimum internship period?
In general, our program is fairly flexible; however, as a minimum, we require that interns complete an 8-week internship and duration flexibility will vary by each location and supervisor. Please list your availability on your application form and speak with your interviewer directly about your concerns.
I have classes at my university/school and won’t be available to intern during the listed time periods. Is there any other way I can become involved with Ashinaga?
Yes, we offer a number of volunteer opportunities. To learn more please visit our “Support Us” and “Volunteer with Us” pages.
Do I have to speak Japanese to intern in Japan?
Language proficiency requirements vary by team; however, most of our teams do not require interns to speak Japanese. Team requirements can be found on the application form.
I don’t have a certificate to prove my language proficiency. May I still apply?
Yes, you are still eligible to apply. Our language proficiency requirements are listed as guidelines and language exam certificates are not required. On your application form, select the level that best matches your current proficiency. We will check your language proficiency skills during the interview process.
The application form won’t load for me. Is there any other way I can apply?
Unfortunately, we do not accept applications outside of our application form. We recommend using a different browser or reloading the page. If you continue to experience problems, please contact internship@ashinaga.org.
When will application results be released?
While we’re not able to reach out to every applicant, our recruiting team will contact you if your skills and experience are a strong match for the role. Results can be expected within two months following the application deadline.
May I apply to multiple locations and terms?
All applicants are eligible to apply to multiple internship program locations. You may also select the period or periods (Summer, Fall, Prep Camp, etc.) that best match your availability. Applicants may select multiple internship periods or camps if they are interested in long-term internships.
I submitted an application last year. Do I have to submit a new application this year?
Yes, if you would like to apply again, you have to submit a new application for the new application year.
If I already have housing near the internship location, do I need to stay in Ashinaga provided accommodation?
Depending on the team you’re in, it is not necessary for you to stay in Ashinaga provided accommodation; however, free meals (which are provided in our dormitories only) can not be substituted for monetary value.
What expenses do interns have to cover?
As a minimum, all locations provide interns with round-trip flights, accommodation, reimbursement for work-related travel, and daily meal(s). As we will purchase all flights in advance, interns only need to pay for their miscellaneous expenses. Program benefits vary by location and details are listed on our application forms.
Submitted an error on your application form?
Send an email to internship@ashinaga.org stating your name, which location you applied to, an explanation of the errors, and any documents or information necessary for correcting it.
I missed the application deadline. Can I still apply?
Applications submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.
I need to complete a long-term internship for my degree. Is this possible?
We cannot guarantee that a long-term internship will be granted, but we do sometimes accept long-term internships. We recommend that you apply for all internship periods/camps that you are available for and if accepted for an interview discuss in detail with your interviewer.
