Summer internship at the University of Tokyo in Japan (fully funded)

The Amgen Scholars program provides hundreds of undergraduates each year with the opportunity to undertake scientific research projects in several of the world’s largest institutions.

The aim of the program is to provide undergraduate students from different countries (including some from Japan) who have committed or who are considering a career in biology or related sciences and who are seeking to pursue higher education, with eight weeks of experience in biomedical research in basic and translational sciences. At the end of their summer experience, students should acquire knowledge and skills to conduct research. Students should also extend their international friendship through collaborative experiences. These experiences will help students develop future collaborations in many situations

  • UTokyo Amgen Scholars 2020 in Japan (June 19, 2020 – August 3, 2020)
  • Amgen Scholars Asian Symposium in Singapore (August 6, 2020 – August 8, 2020)

Eligibility conditions (criteria)

  • Applicants to the UTokyo Amgen Scholarship Program must be undergraduate students who are:
    • Enrolled in colleges or universities around the world that award a bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent).
    • At a minimum, have completed their first year of undergraduate study by the time the summer program begins.
    • Do not graduate before the start of the summer program and after the end of the summer program, undergraduate studies will resume for at least 1 semester or 1 trimester.
    • Have a solid record of academic performance.
    • Have a good working knowledge of English, demonstrated by a  minimum TOEFL (iBT) score  of   72  , an overall IELTS band score   of   5.5  , an English Cambridge FCE, a TOEIC score   of  1095  , a TOEIC L&R score     of   785  or a TOEIC   S&W score   of   310  , otherwise a native English speaker or English is not your native language.
    • Have an interest in pursuing a doctorate.
  • requirements:
    • Devote all of their efforts to participation in the Amgen scholarship program. Fellows cannot take any course or hold a job for the duration of the program. In addition, all participants must be able to attend the program throughout its duration.
    • Living in the accommodation provided by UTokyo.
    • To fully participate in the daily life of the research group, respect the work of all members of the laboratory and attend and participate in laboratory meetings or other gatherings.
    • To attend the orientation on   June 9  , all conferences, activities and social events required.
    • Give a poster / presentation describing his summer research project.
    • Submit a research paper to the director of the UTokyo Amgen Fellows at the end of the program.

Opportunity cost

  • ROOM  : Accommodation near the campus
  • STIPEND  : The allowance should be used freely to budget for food and any personal travel during your stay in Japan, etc.
  • TRAVEL EXPENSES  : Economy class air tickets for flights or return train tickets for national students will be provided to participate in the Amgen Scholars Asia program and symposium to be held in Singapore. The most economical and direct itinerary and travel schedule will be determined based on discussion between participants and the program office. If the schedule is changed for personal reasons of the participant, he will have to reimburse the University of Tokyo for the cost of the flights originally booked.

First step:  Before applying, prepare your documents:

 1. Photo portrait

Please upload your portrait photo saved as a jpeg file. The medjouel.com team informs you that your face must be visible in the photo, and it must be taken from the front with your eyes open (same rules as photos for a passport, 45 x 35 mm).

2. Scanned copy of passport or identity card

Please scan the page with the photo and name of your passport or identity card such as student card or national identity card and save it as a JPEG file

4. Academic transcript

Please obtain an official transcript (in English) and scan and save the front and back pages in PDF format.

5. Questionnaire

Download and complete the form designated  Questionnaire_UTokyoASP2020.xlsx  .   Please save your documents in an Excel file (eg .xls / xlsx).

6. Proof of your command of English

  • Non-native speakers whose institutions are located in an area where English is not the first language and the educational environment is not English must submit a valid proficiency test score as listed on eligibility above.
  • Non-native speakers whose institutions are located in a region where English is not the first language but whose teaching environment is English are required to submit a valid proficiency test score listed on eligibility above, or a letter stating that you are continuing your studies in English issued by your university.
  • non-native English speakers who have completed undergraduate studies at an institution located in an area where English is the first language and whose language of instruction is English are not required to submit test scores or letters.

7. Letter of reference

  • You must appoint two people to provide letters of reference, one of whom must be a faculty member from your current institution who knows your background, academic performance and motivation to participate in the 2020 program.
  • It must appear on a departmental / university letterhead, including the signature of the arbitrator.
  • It must then be scanned and submitted as a PDF file.
  • Note that the reference letter must indicate your applicant number, which appears under your photo when you create your T-cens SP account.

8. Privacy statement and agreement

Please download and read the “Privacy Statement” carefully    ,  sign the agreement on the statement and submit it by downloading it via T-cens SP. Please note that applicants cannot apply for the program without this signed document.

Second step:  C  reate a new account   and get your application number.

Third step:  fill in all the applications and download the files. Make sure that the file size of each document does not exceed   2 MB  .
