A village in Italy, “without Covid”, is selling houses for 1 euro

To attract the inhabitants, more and more villages are resorting to the same strategy: offering to buy houses for 1 euro. In return, they must agree to restore these residences, very often abandoned for several years. This is particularly the case in Roubaix or Liverpool. In Italy, these initiatives are multiplying in rural areas. And the crisis did not stop them. Quite the contrary.

In Cinquefrondi, a municipality in the Calabria region (in southern Italy, in the tip of the “Boot”), the mayor made the decision to sell houses for a symbolic sum, explains CNN. “Finding new beneficiaries for the abandoned houses we have is a key element of the” Beauty “operation that I launched to renovate the degraded and neglected areas of the city,” explains Michele Conia.

In return, the owners must pay an annual insurance of 250 euros until the end of the work, which generally takes place over a maximum of three years. If the site is not finalized in time, the owners will have to pay a fine of 20,000 euros. This amount corresponds, according to the municipal council, to the cost of repairing these houses whose surface is between 40 and 50 m². A low price for “unstable and risky” homes. The explanation? The cost of labor and raw materials is “cheap”.

To definitively reassure those concerned, Michele Conia indicates that her village has not registered any case of coronavirus among its inhabitants and is located in a region which has one of the lowest contamination rates in Italy. It remains to be seen whether this argument will appeal to candidates. Because the tempting offer can turn into a flop. This is what happened to a village in Sicily: after having failed to sell them for one euro, the municipality of Cammarata had to resolve to offer them. Not sure that this difference of one euro attracts more interested parties.
