The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program provides merit-based scholarships to recognize academic excellence in all disciplines of academic studies at the master’s and doctoral level. The scholarship is jointly funded by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities (‘Ministry’) and Carleton University. The Ministry provides two-thirds of the value of the award and the university one-third.

Value and Duration

The OGS is valued at $15,000 for one year: $5,000 per term up to a maximum of three (3) terms, and must be held for a minimum of two (2) consecutive terms.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) at the time of the application deadline; International students who are studying in Ontario with a study permit under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) at the time of application are eligible to apply for the allotted OGS international student awards
  • Applicants must have a 10.0 GPA (A-) in each of their last two years of full-time study
  • Applicants must be enrolled full-time or intend to be enrolled full-time in a graduate program at Carleton University in the 2024-25 academic year. Students with disabilities may study part-time
  • Applicants who are in or will be going into an extension term in the graduate program for which they are requesting funding are not eligible to hold an OGS
  • Applicants whose program time to completion is before December 31 of the academic year in which they would hold the award are not eligible to apply
  • Applicants cannot be in default on any Canadian government-sponsored loan
  • Applicants cannot hold an OGS award in the same term (overlapping) or in the same award year as a scholarship from SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR, Vanier, QEII, or another OGS. Students cannot receive payment from two OGS awarded in consecutive years in the same term.
  • Applicants cannot exceed the following Maximum Support Limits:
    • Master’s students can receive an OGS award for a maximum of two (2) academic years
    • PhD students can receive an OGS award for a maximum of four (4) academic years
    • All students cannot exceed a lifetime maximum of six (6) years of government-funded graduate awards. This includes the following programs:
      • Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR); Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS); Ontario Trillium Scholarship (OTS); Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC); Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC); Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST); Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS)
    • Both program maximums and lifetime maximum must be followed

Deadline

Applications open on August 15, 2023 and close November 15, 2023 at 12:00AM EST (midnight). Late applications will not be accepted. Ensure you allow enough time to submit your application prior to the deadline. The referee deadline is December 1, 2023.

  • All students, who have MC1 credentials and can access Carleton Central should be using the online application, available through Carleton Central. If you have applied to Carleton in the past but never attended, or you have graduated and are planning to come back and have MC1 credentials, please log into Carleton Central and use the online form.   • All other applicants should fill out the OGS application forms available below. Your complete OGS application package, including all forms and supporting documentation, must be submitted to the Graduate Administrator in the department you applied to at Carleton by the specified deadline.
  • Get Transcripts: Applicants must provide up-to-date official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate studies, including transcripts for the fall semester of the year of application. A copy of the legend for each transcript must be included. If transcripts include transfer credits from another institution, the original transcript with the grades shown must also be included. Applicants should retain all paper copies of uploaded transcripts in case they are asked to provide them for verification.
  • Request Two References: Reach out to potential referees well in advance. Once they have agreed, ensure their names and contact information are correctly entered in your application. An official email address must be provided. Once your application is submitted online, your referees will be notified by email that you have listed them as a referee and they will be provided a link to complete their assessment. Decisions

Applicants will be notified of the results of the competition by April each year.

The Nanophotonics section at DTU Electro is seeking a highly motivated postdoc to be a part of a new program on ‘Symmetry-guided discovery of topological photonics’, led by Senior Researcher Thomas Christensen, who moved from MIT to DTU in early 2023.

Funded by a Villum Young Investigator program (link), the project aims to uncover novel kinds of photonic topology using recent ideas and tools at the intersection of topological band theory, symmetry analysis, and group theory. You will work on developing and applying these ideas to discover new photonic phenomena, implement associated computational tooling, and to find opportunities for proof-of-principles demonstrations with experimental collaborators at the department and internationally. In particular, your work will focus on advancing the understanding of the interplay between photonic topology and symmetry in unexplored settings, such as with non-Hermicity, time-periodic driving, or magnetic symmetry.

The program aims to advance the frontiers of theoretical photonics, deepen our understanding of fundamental wave-phenomena, and investigate the applications of topology in photonics.

Responsibilities

You will carry out theoretical and computational work in topological photonics and nanophotonics. This will involve analyzing and computing topological properties of photonic structures, as well as planning and envisioning new research directions. The project is intersectional in that it includes approximately equal measure of analytical, computational, and exploratory work. You are expected to help advance the theoretical understanding, e.g., by development of new theoretical frameworks, applying existing frameworks, and implementing novel methodology in shared code repositories. You will also assist in instructing and guiding the research of MSc and PhD students.

Qualifications

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Special consideration will be given to candidates with:

  • A background in theoretical photonics or condensed matter physics
  • First-rate mathematical ability
  • Experience in programming and contributions to open-source software
  • Excellent communication skills, e.g., demonstrated by a track-record of high-impact publications
  • Interest in the supervision and mentoring of students

What you will do

The evolution of semiconductor technologies has traditionally been driven by four factors:  increase of performance, reduction of power consumption, area, and cost. Future technologies should also follow a sustainable scaling path where the environmental impact must be quantified and minimized.  At imec, the research program Sustainable Semiconductor Technology and Systems assesses the environmental footprint of current and upcoming technologies with the goal to develop more sustainable solutions. This requires a holistic view on fabrication processes and technology options. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to join our team and continue growing this exciting and crucial project.  You will join a team of researchers who evaluate the environmental impact of today’s and future semiconductor technologies. You will help bring these evaluations up to system level and investigate alternative solutions at process, device, and design levels.  You will assess these different options in terms of carbon footprint, water, and rare material usage, in order to develop future eco-friendly technologies (design for sustainability) and help define and communicate electronics sustainability roadmaps. Job description

Large-scale hydrogen storage is an important objective in the clean energy transition, because it can be used to store renewable energy: hydrogen can be generated at times of surplus in solar or wind energy, to be stored and used when the energy demand exceeds the renewable production. One of the most promising techniques to do this at a large scale is to inject hydrogen into pores or fractures that are naturally present in rock layers in the deep subsurface (typically deeper than 1000 m). However, actual experience of storing hydrogen in this type of geological reservoirs is very limited, and still requires fundamental scientific research. This PhD project fits within a research collaboration between Ghent University and Fluxys, the company which operates a.o. the Belgian natural gas transmission system. Currently, Fluxys stores natural gas in a karst aquifer (a fractured carbonate rock layer) at more than 1000 m depth in the North of Belgium, and now wants to investigate if this site can be transitioned to a hydrogen storage. To contribute to this, you will investigate the flow properties of hydrogen in the pores/fractures of carbonate rock samples, its reactivity with the (saline) water and minerals present in the underground reservoir, and the risk that microbial processes consume the stored hydrogen and change the hydraulic properties by biofilm clogging. This will be done by laboratory studies at UGent (Dept. Geology, Center for X-ray Tomography and Center for Microbial Ecology and Technology), using advanced experimental techniques such as X-ray micro-computed tomography, core floodings on fractured rock samples, high-pressure batch reaction tests, microbial community quantification and fingerprinting by flow cytometry and microbial community characterization by second generation sequencing. The PhD student will also interact with Fluxys on a regular basis to compare laboratory results to field tests, aiding the interpretation. The work is supported by an Energy Transition Fund grant from the Belgian federal government. As a PhD researcher your tasks are:

  • Design, set-up and analyze experiments in the lab
  • Share results with colleagues and discuss interpretations at lab meetings and meetings with the industry partner
  • Follow the recent literature on underground hydrogen storage in porous/fractured media
  • Write reports, scientific publications, and attend international conferences
  • Guide research projects of BSc and MSc (thesis) students

Job profile

  • You have an MSc degree relevant to the position; e.g. in geology, bio-engineering, chemical engineering or equivalent. Research experience related to hydrogeology, groundwater chemistry or microbial ecology is a plus.
  • You have a strong interest in laboratory work, including building/modifying experimental setups, developing new experimental workflows, and working with state-of-the-art equipment.
  • You have good data analysis skills. Knowledge of scripting or programming languages is a plus.
  • You have strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • You have an excellent command of the English language (written and spoken), and good communication skills. Experience with scientific writing is a plus.
  • You are a team player willing to work in an international research environment.
  • You are interested in performing scientific research over different disciplines

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The successful postdoctoral candidate will explore novel strategies to reprograme Tumor-Associate Macrophage (TAM) tumor-driving phenotypes in experimental tumor models and patient samples in the research group headed by Charlotte Rolny. The research group has longstanding experience in the field of the tumor microenvironment field, and is a member of the  Swedish Tumor Microenvironment Program and the Breast Cancer Theme Center.

The research is conducted within an interdisciplinary framework at the Department of Oncology-Pathology, fostering an environment that encourages collaboration and innovation. Moreover, the research group maintains robust partnerships with clinical counterparts, as well as national and international research collectives.

TAMs are plastic cells exhibiting states and phenotypes spanning from anti-tumor/immunostimulating (sometimes referred to as M1-like) to pro-tumor/immunosuppressive (also denoted M2-like). We previously showed that TAMs located in the vicinity of tumor vessels (perivascular TAMs) promote vessel abnormalization and fuel metastatic dissemination. Our published and preliminary data suggest the relevance of such TAMs also in human cancers as their accumulation correlates with increased malignancy and metastasis. Furthermore, pro-tumor TAMs drive tumor growth by suppressing tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) that target tumor cells. Therefore, TAMs can play diverse and critical roles in cancer. Yet, current knowledge of how such distinct TAM phenotypes manifest is limited. Over the years, Rolny and co-workers, have showed that reprograming of TAM pro-tumor phenotype into an anti-tumor phenotype is a valid anti-cancer strategy.  We have now pinpointed a unique pathway that regulates TAM pro-tumor functions that may pave way for development of novel anti-cancer targets.The postdoctoral project will explore candidate targets for reprogramming TAMs in experimental models as well as patient samples.

Division

The Department of Oncology-Pathology conducts basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer.  The research group has longstanding experience in the field of the tumor microenvironment field, and is a member of the  Swedish Tumor Microenvironment Program and the Breast Cancer Theme Center.

Duties

We are actively seeking a motivated and creative postdoctoral candidate who possesses an interest in investigating the drivers behind the pro-tumoral functions of TAMs. This research endeavor will encompass cutting-edge molecular biology techniques, animal tumor models, and patient samples. The candidate should be capable of generating novel ideas, acquire knowledge independently and possess sufficient computational skills to evaluate and develop ongoing projects. It is preferable that the applicant has a background in tumor biology. Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Because of the scope of the project, knowledge and experience in animal work, flow cytometry analysis and confocal microscopy imaging is strongly desired.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Solna

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

The research group of Professor Maria Eriksson at the department of Biosciences and Nutrition is looking for 1-2 highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to study somatic mutations in age-associated disease. The research aims at understanding the role of somatic mutations and their functional relevance in the development of age-associated diseases. The division

The research group of Professor Maria Eriksson aims to identify novel genetic mechanisms of aging with a special focus on somatic mutations and their functional contribution to aging and age-associated diseases. The group also has a long-standing interest in the study of the premature aging disorder Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, trying to identify novel targets for treatment. The group consists of 2 postdocs and 2 PhD students, and has recently obtained an ERC Advanced grant to study somatic mutations in vascular wall function and is therefore looking to expand with 1-2 additional postdocs.

The research group is part of a larger “Aging and Cancer” space that consists of 6 other research groups located next to each other within a modern research building. Such stimulating environment allows for several arrangements of joint events and promotes daily interactions, collaborations and sharing of expertise.

Your mission

Somatic cells accumulate thousands of mutations during development and aging. However, detailed analysis and insight into the extent of somatic variance in the vascular tissue is lacking. The postdoc will study the clonality of the vascular wall in human tissue samples and generate advanced mouse models based on lineage tracing to follow the fate of mutated cells. The aim is to define functional implications of somatic mutations in relation to aging and age-associated cardiovascular disease. The research work includes standard molecular biological techniques, mouse phenotyping and modern omics-approaches. The postdoc is expected to be part of the group and to develop in accordance with the common group goals and research interests.

Your profile

Applications are invited from highly motivated individuals with a PhD and a strong background in molecular biology or genetics. Previous experience from work with human samples, mouse models and modern genomics technologies is required. Experience from work on the vascular system and lineage tracing, using confetti or similar strains, and rare event detection, is advantageous. Successful candidates are enthusiastic, responsible, able to perform their own experiments and analysis. They can provide suggestions and support in experimental design and experimentation to other members of the group. Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement.

In the DIRECT project, funded by NWO, an interdisciplinary team of academics together with solar companies and cooperatives work on solar power plants for which buildings, nature, and agriculture surrounding the solar panels contribute to the solar energy collection. The project develops a new type of nanophotonic material which collects sunlight and sends invisible infrared light towards solar panels, and thus has the potential to enable more solar energy production per area at significantly reduced cost, environmental burden, and landscape alteration. The DIRECT project is embedded in the Solar Centre of the University of Twente offering a collaborative environment for shaping the future of solar energy!

We are looking for a motivated, creative and open-minded postdoc researcher who will study the possibilities, conditions and implications of new solar configurations enhanced with light-bundling surfaces, with a view on integration into established solar uses, such as buildings, emerging uses, such as agrovoltaics and potential new uses, e.g. in hydrogen production. You will furthermore develop socio-technical scenarios to explore possible pathways with relevant stakeholders.

With recent advances in treatment, patients with primary brain tumors can be more effectively treated through a combination of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. With increasing long-term survival of these patients, it has become increasingly important to safeguard long-term quality of life by limiting treatment-related side-effects.

Radiotherapy in particular has been shown to affect long-term neurocognitive functioning. Novel radiotherapy techniques, such as proton beam therapy, are able to reduce the irradiation of healthy brain tissue, potentially limiting neurocognitive sequelae.

However, the radiation susceptibility of different brain regions as well as their functional importance in brain tumor survivors is still largely unknown today. Therefore, we aim to better characterize and predict neurocognitive decline using Advanced MRI techniques looking at the brain anatomy (T1w, T2 and FLAIR), structural and functional connectivity (multishell diffusion imaging and resting-state functional imaging), metabolites (spectroscopy) and vasculature (SWI, ASL and perfusion) imaging.

The ability to understand and predict neurocognitive decline in both pediatric and adult brain tumor patients, will allow us to optimize treatment and improve patient-tailored support.

You will be working in a multidisciplinary environment that includes the expertise of three expert groups. First, the research group on translational MRI, specialized in the use of advanced neuroimaging techniques such as multishell diffusion weighted and functional MRI. Second, the laboratory of experimental radiotherapy and the Particle Therapy Interuniversity Center Leuven (PARTICLE) (Prof. Dr. Maarten Lambrecht). PARTICLE is the first, and so far only, clinical proton therapy center in Belgium. Third, the researcher will be part of the pediatric oncology unit (Prof. Dr. Sandra Jacobs and Prof. Dr. Jurgen Lemiere). Since 2010, this group has been documenting the neurocognitive trajectories of all pediatric brain tumor patients, using neuropsychological test batteries at regular intervals, building a unique database. Since 2020, this research has been expanded with the use of advanced MRI.

Responsibilities

We offer a job position to a postdoctoral researcher who is knowledgeable in the combination of:

Structural, diffusion, and functional MRI

Brain tumor lesions and/or Radiotherapy

Cognitive neuroscience

Your role is to combine multimodal MRI in adult and pediatric brain tumor treated patients with neurocognitive outcome measures to evaluate the impact of different treatment options on cognitive decline and translate this towards improved treatment strategies for optimal survival and quality of life.

You will supervise at least two PhD students working on this topic.

You will be able to bring guidance in MRI analysis, interpretation of results and in writing manuscripts.

You will aid in setting out new projects within the combined research groups and acquire funding.

It is mandatory to have sufficient experience in the above mentioned 3 domains to apply for this position.

Are you enthusiastic about exploring scientific challenges with an industrial  application perspective?

Extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUVL) is the latest generation of the semiconductor manufacturing technology powered by laser-produced-plasma light sources. These EUV light sources emit in a broad range of wavelengths spanning from soft x-rays to visible. A quantitative spectral characterization capability of such a broad wavelength range recently become available using a proprietary transmission grating spectrometer developed by XUV optics group (https://doi.org/10.1063/5.0073839). The calibration of the charge-coupled-device (CCD) that are used as detectors in such a spectrometer is sensitive to the operation conditions of the light source. Cross-calibration of the CCD with other type of detectors such as photodiodes and investigating the light sources with time resolution provides wealth of information that is otherwise not accessible.

We are looking for a motivated and skilled post-doctoral researcher to carry out research on the fundamental physics questions on the calibration sensitivity and time-dependent spectral evolution of the EUV light source. Methods to enable inline calibration and time-resolved operation is to be developed in the project with the support of technical staff. Specifically, aim is to design multilayer spectral filters based on Bragg’s condition and deposition these designs using magnetron sputtering to enable cross-calibration of the CCD response and the photodiode response.

The XUV Optics Group at Twente has started a new multidisciplinary research program on these topics. We develop forefront fundamental research, relevant to high tech applications (www.utwente.nl/xuv/). The research will take place in a state-of-the-art thin film laboratory within the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology at the University of Twente, in collaboration with various academic and industrial partners. The XUV group has a track record in developing thin film physics and holds several records in functional film properties, including the reflectivity of thin film multilayer optics.

Challenge

Your goal is to develop the fundamental physics understanding on time-resolved and calibrated spectroscopy of EUV light sources. This includes:

  • Understanding the sensitivity of detector calibration to the operation conditions of the EUV light source,
  • Designing and developing multilayer spectral filters/coatings to enable online calibration at various wavelengths,
  • Analyzing the properties of the developed filters/coatings using characterization techniques such as AFM, XRD, XRR and SEM,
  • Understanding the time-dependent evolution of the spectral emission of the EUV light sources.

The application-oriented research activities in the Department of Plasma Diagnostics are centered on the development and application of advanced laser-based diagnostics for the characterisation of plasma-chemical processes and plasma-surface interactions. For open scientific questions in the field of EUV lithography, we are looking for the following expert to join us in an ongoing collaboration at the earliest possible date - ideally from beginning of November:

POST DOC (F/M/D) FOR LASER-BASED PLASMA DIAGNOSTICS

* Fixed term contract initially for 15 months (extension for 3 more years possible)  * Full-time appointment (40 hours/week) * Target salary according to TV-L in wage group E 13 (Gross salary range depending on professional experience, see Renumeration table 2023)

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • to operate and maintain a two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence experiment (TALIF)
  • to quantify densities of atomic hydrogen in a hydrogen-containing plasma for the analysis of their loss rates on selected surfaces
  • to apply laser-based spectroscopic methods such as cavity ring-down spectroscopy to extend the analysis for molecular radicals in hydrogen-containing plasmas with impurities
  • to carry out detailed studies to elucidate relevant plasma-chemical processes and to identify key species in the plasma

Futhermore, you will:

  • Work together with scientists from the institute and the project team of the client
  • Communicate regularly project results to the project team at weakly meetings

YOUR PROFILE: 

  • Experimental physicist or chemist or equivalent degree with a completed PhD degree
  • Very good knowledge in the field of laser spectroscopy for the sensitive detection of atoms and molecules in the gas phase
  • Experience with diagnostics based on cavity enhanced spectroscopy
  • Experience in the field of plasma spectroscopy desirable
  • Confident use of tools such as Python, Matlab and Origin
  • Highly motivated and with the drive to advance scientific research in the field of plasma diagnostics and plasma chemistry
  • High degree of commitment, incentive, self-reliant working, ability to handle stress, team spirit, flexibility, reliability and problem-solving competence
  • Confident manner and communicative personality
  • Good English skills (spoken and written)
  • Experience in writing scientific reports and publications

Your Role

We offer an attractive research associate position in the context of the LOGODOR project, funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR). The project aims to develop automated and scalable techniques for detecting and removing a wide range of log smells, and to empirically evaluate the benefits of using logs processed by means of such techniques in the context of log-driven analyses (e.g., anomaly detection, model inference).

The successful candidate will join the SVV research group, headed by Prof. Lionel Briand, and will report to Prof. Domenico Bianculli (project PI and deputy head of the group). The team focuses on the development and design of reliable, safe, and secure software systems, carrying out both upstream activities such as requirements quality assurance and architecture analysis, as well as downstream verification & validation activities, primarily software testing and analysis. Your Job:

You will be part of the Novel Catalyst Design department, headed by Prof. Dr. Marc Ledendecker. The department focuses on the fabrication of metal-based, inorganic catalysts for the global energy transition. We use many different nanoparticles to fabricate highly active supported catalysts. Specifically, this dissertation focuses on the preparation of platinum-based and iridium oxide-based catalysts for the acidic water splitting reaction as used in polymer electrolyte membrane units (e.g. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/aenm.202301450/). You will simultaneously have the opportunity to do your PhD at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) (including graduate school) and also to use the infrastructure of TUM. Your tasks in detail:

  • Preparation of inorganic nanostructured catalysts based on iridium and platinum
  • Characterization of the materials by physicochemical characterization methods, such as XRD, XRF, ICP-MS, XPS, or HR-TEM
  • Evaluation of the measurements and correlation of the obtained data
  • Preparation of presentations and project reports
  • Presentation of results at conferences and in scientific publications
