The explosion of the Internet, the pervasive uses of technologies in daily activities and many environments, including remote home working, impose ever more mental workload upon operators and less physical load. The principal reason for measuring workload (MWL) is to quantify the mental cost of performing tasks to predict human performance. In turn, performance prediction can be used for designing interfaces, technologies, and information-processing activities optimally aligned to the well-known human mental limited capacities. Despite 60 years of effort, research on MWL has not been able to make major advances yet, failing to provide a model of understanding. Guess intuitions and several field-dependent definitions have proliferated, but these disagree about the MWL sources, its attributes and their impact on human performance. Identifying these and how they impinge on human potential are all open research problems. The project will focus on multi- disciplinary research in the area of Mental Workload (MWL) modelling leading to a major understanding of the construct (fundamental breakthrough). It will provide human-centred designers with an interpretable and explainable model of MWL for real-time prediction of task performance, a revolutionary contribution to the field of Human-Computer Interaction (applied breakthrough). This contribution will allow human-centred designers to develop and rapidly test their interactive technologies and information-processing procedures aligned to the limitation of the mental capacity and that maximises human potential.

Job description
The University of Stavanger (UiS) invites applicants for a PhD Fellowship in Multilingualism at the Faculty of Arts and Education, Department of Cultural Studies and Languages. The position is vacant from 01.01.2024.
This is a trainee position that will give promising researchers an opportunity for academic development through a PhD education leading to a doctoral degree.
The appointment is for three years with research duties exclusively, or four years with both research and 25% required duties. This will be clarified in the recruitment process.
The hired candidate will be admitted to the PhD program in Educational Sciences and Humanities. The education includes relevant courses amounting to about six months of study, a dissertation based on independent research, participation in national and international research environments, relevant academic communication, a trial lecture and public defence. Read more about the PhD education at UiS on our website.
Research topic
The research topic for this PhD fellowship is multilingualism. The fellowship focuses on heritage language speakers in Norway (and beyond), i.e., individuals speaking a minoritized language and the societal majority language (Norwegian) who also learn English (and further languages) in an educational setting.
Heritage language multilinguals are an understudied subgroup of multilinguals. To date, the continued development of the heritage language in children and adults is under-investigated, especially in combination with the development of the same individual’s second and third languages. Heritage speakers find themselves in a context where another language, the societal majority language, differs from their heritage/first/family language yet is the language in which they are educated and often become increasingly dominant over time. Whereas many studies focus exclusively on the heritage language, this PhD project helps to fill an important gap by examining all languages involved, i.e., the development of a heritage language in combination with Norwegian, English, and possibly additional languages. The specific language combinations will be determined by the PhD fellow, and should be discussed in the project proposal.
The PhD Fellow will be affiliated with the research group FLUENT (FLerspråklig Utvikling og Endring i Nyere Tid / Multilingual Development and Change in Society Today) and will be anchored in the Department of Cultural Studies and Languages. FLUENT investigates multilingualism from a variety of perspectives, including acquisitional, formal, social, and educational approaches. The research group is interdisciplinary in nature and welcomes diverse approaches and perspectives. Thus, potential areas of focus for the PhD project include, but are not limited to, multilingual language acquisition and development in children and adults, linguistic properties of heritage languages, the role of extra-linguistic variables in heritage language multilingualism, cross-linguistic influence, plurilingual teaching approaches, heritage language instruction, preparedness of pre- and in-service teachers for multilingual classrooms. Projects that promote collaboration between local schools and UiS are particularly welcome.
According to the core curriculum for primary and secondary education, students “shall experience that being proficient in a number of languages is a resource, both in school and society at large” and that “[k]nowledge about the linguistic diversity in society provides […] valuable insight into different forms of expression, ideas and traditions.” These values tie in with UiS’ strategy 2030, in particular Learning for Life, which promotes education and participation in democracy and cultural understanding in all phases of life.
The thesis will be supervised and written in English.
Project proposal
As an applicant, you must prepare a preliminary project proposal for a doctoral project within the subject area, which explains the problem, relevance, theoretical and methodological approach. Your preliminary project proposal will be included in the application assessment.
During the first three months of the employment period, the project proposal and progress plan will be further developed in cooperation with your supervisors and completed for the final plan for the PhD-project. A project proposal template can be found here.
Please write your project proposal in English.
Qualification requirements
We are looking for applicants with a strong academic background who have completed a five-year master degree (3+2) within (Applied) linguistics, Multilingualism, or Teacher Education, preferably acquired recently; or who possess corresponding qualifications that could provide a basis for successfully completing a doctorate.
To be eligible for admission to the doctoral programmes at the University of Stavanger both the grade for your master’s thesis and the weighted average grade of your master’s degree must individually be equivalent to or better than a B grade.
Applicants with an education from an institution with a different grade scale than A-F, and/or with other types of credits than sp/ECTS, must attach a confirmed conversion scale that shows how the grades can be compared with the Norwegian A-F scale and a Diploma Supplement or similar that explains the scope of the subjects that are included in the education. Offer Description
The position
At the Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NCFS), within the Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE) at The Arctic University of Norway (UiT), we are pleased to announce a vacant PhD position within ethics and sustainability in a marine context. The position will be affiliated with the research groups MARA and BRIDGE. The position is for a period of four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year is distributed as 25 % each year and will consist of teaching and other duties. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer. The position’s field of research
The PhD position is situated within a strategic project funded by the UiT, which has an overarching thematic focus on “green transition, ethics and societal responsibility”. The PhD project will focus on ethics and sustainability in the context of commercial marine activities. The project will identify, analyze and theorize about important contemporary marine sustainability dilemmas, preferably with a main focus on a Norwegian context. Sustainability dilemmas arise when dimensions and/or values linked to sustainability are in tension with each other. For instance, tensions between social, economic, and environmental aspects of a particular development, innovation or decision. Specifically, the PhD project should focus on sustainability dilemmas within either of the following two areas: 1) Remote Electronic Monitoring vs. privacy concerns in the seafood sector Technological capabilities for Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM) of fisheries are developing rapidly. REM may offer a cost-effective solution for monitoring fisheries activities, and thereby support developments towards sustainable fisheries. REM may contribute to reduce the extent of illegal and unreported fishing, which could level the playing field between fishers and increase the quality of data underpinning fisheries resource assessments. The Norwegian Fisheries Directorate aims to enhance the use of REM, but many fishers are skeptical to REM approaches, which they see as unnecessary and intrusive. Under which circumstances will REM be justified and acceptable? How do fishers and other relevant actors in fisheries governance tend to balance privacy concerns of REM in relation to concerns with IUU fishing? How can concerns of sustainable fisheries and privacy aspects relating to REM in fisheries be evaluated? 2) Seabed mining: Minerals for renewable energy development vs. environmental concerns Seabed mining represents a potential source of metals and minerals that are in high demand in relation to a transition towards renewable energy production. The current extraction of relevant metals and minerals from terrestrial sources is subject to significant environmental, geopolitical, and social concerns. At a recent IUCN conference, most countries voted in favor of a moratorium on deep sea mining. The Norwegian government voted against the moratorium and has proposed opening an area of the Norwegian Continental Shelf for exploration of seabed mining, with the goal that Norway shall take a leading position in a knowledge-based and sustainable management of this emerging industry. Seabed mining, however, has been portrayed as an environmentally risky endeavor, with unknown consequences for sensitive and partially unexplored species, habitats and ecosystems. Under which circumstances may seabed mining be justifiable as an element of an energy transition? What would be required for genuine sustainable management of such an emerging industry? What theory or framework may support an evaluation of such questions? The PhD fellow will be supervised by Kåre Nolde Nielsen in a team with other supervisors, to be defined in cooperation with the employed PhD candidate. The applicants must present a description of a relevant and realistic PhD project within the general scope of one of the two topics mentioned above. The project description shall not exceed 4 pages, literature references included. It must include a description and motivation of the research focus within the context of existing knowledge, the research question(s), methods, concepts and theories to be pursued, as well as a (simple) time plan. It can be considered that a PhD thesis within this field at UiT will normally be expected to include a coherent and strategic compilation of 3-4 published or publishable manuscripts, which are integrated through a common introduction. Note that the project description mainly serves to provide a basis for evaluating applicants, while the selected candidate will develop a final project description in cooperation with the team of supervisors.Contact

The triple planetary crisis (climate change, pollution & biodiversity loss) is spurring us to consider and evaluate biobased systems and products. For this PhD position, the focus is on certain biofuel and food alternatives. These still have considerable impacts on the environment and their respective environmental impacts should be better estimated, to guide decision-making. Hereto life cycle methods shall be improved and applied. More precisely, in this PhD project, the first goal is to further develop life cycle methods with regard to dynamic modelling over time of their inventories and impact, e.g. CO2 flows are spread over time for biobased systems, and finetune consequential modelling, in particular land use modelling and competition between food and fuel for these. The second overall aim of your PhD is to apply the developed methodologies to two cases, one on a novel biofuel, and one on legumes, taking into account as well their competition for land. In practice, during the course of your PhD, you will be working on various projects funded in the framework of Horizon Europe.Requirements
