2 PhD Positions Social Sciences

The Gender, War, and Security Research Group at the Center for Gender Studies in the Department of Social Sciences, University of Basel invites applications for two PhD positions. The PhD students will be part of a research project led by Dr. Elizabeth Mesok, studying the development and implementation of security strategies designed to ‘counter and prevent violent extremism,’ with a particular focus on the gendered implications of such strategies.

Your position

The planned research will focus on the emergence of gendered approaches to ‘counter and prevent violent extremism’ as enacted across different sectors including state and military institutions, civil society organizations, and multilateral development agencies, as well as the impact such strategies have on the communities in which they are implemented. PhD projects will ideally combine feminist ethnographic and discursive methods, and engage with critical security studies and feminist theory. The PhD is interdisciplinary and the students will be based in the Center for Gender Studies, with opportunities to work with the Departments of Political Science, Cultural Anthropology, and African Studies.

Your profile

We are looking for motivated candidates with an MA in gender studies, political science, international relations, anthropology, or a related discipline. Candidates are expected to have a strong interest in both feminist theory and critical security studies. Candidates should also have strong interpersonal and communication skills, be self-motivated and able to work well on an interdisciplinary team. Fluency in spoken and written English is essential.

The PhD projects (100%) will be part of a research project funded for 4 years by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF). We offer an international, multidisciplinary work environment and excellent research infrastructure. Compensation will be according to the guidelines of the Swiss National Science Foundation (www.snf.ch). The expected start date is 1 August 2020.
