Postdoctoral Researcher In Computational Sciences (Biology)

The Department of Biology invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral researcher for a period of 24 months, starting according to agreement (possibly 1.6.2020).

The doctoral candidate will work in a Finnish Academy granted research project URKO (Uralic triangulation/Uralilainen kolmio, https://sites.utu.fi/urko/). URKO studies human past in the Uralic language speaker area (in the North-Western Eurasia) by using linguistic, cultural, genetic and environmental data, and by applying statistical, probabilistic and spatial methods. The project develops user-oriented online interfaces to databases in cartography, archaeology and linguistics, as well as computational methods for multidisciplinary studies of human prehistory.

The postdoctoral researcher will advance computational analyses for integrating spatial, cultural and genetic data and coordinate the development of the user interface for the archaeological database of Finnish area, with UTU IT experts carrying out the actual programming. The candidate will also participate teaching digital humanistics by developing teaching material for computational methods, and running practical exercises.

The applicant will have strong and motivating working environment in the University of Turku, which hosts interdisciplinary projects: in addition to URKO, the applicant will be actively interacting with research groups studying the ancient DNA of the Uralic speaker area (SUGRIGE, the Ancient genes of North-Eastern Europe, https://sites.utu.fi/paleogenetics/en) and linguistic history of the Uralic speaking area (BEDLAN, Biological evolution and diversification of languages, www.bedlan.net).

Successful candidate will have a relevant doctor’s degree in statistics, mathematics, computer science, bioinformatics, geography or similar field, and is familiar with developing and working with databases. We are looking for person with interest in working within multidisciplinary research community and with high level of motivation, self-initiative and independency. Excellent team work and communication skills in English language (both oral and written) are needed. Familiarity with Bayesian statistical modelling and programs, and archeological data is considered as benefit.

The qualification requirements of the position are written in the University of Turku rules of procedure. A person selected for the post of postdoctoral researcher is required to have a doctoral degree and the ability to do independent scientific work as well as having the necessary teaching skills. The doctoral degree must be completed by the end of the application period.

There will be a trial period of 6 months.

The salary for a Postdoctoral Researcher is based on the University salary system for teaching and research personnel. For a Postdoctoral Researcher, the salary is at levels 4-6 on the job demands chart, where the task specific salary component is 2535,20-3423,25 euro per month. In addition, a personal work performance component will be paid. The personal performance component is a 6% – 50% of the task-specific base salary. At the beginning of the employment contract, the salary is 3229,22€/kk.
