The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, at Western University, London, Ontario, Canada is inviting applications for the position of Chair in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a vibrant department with a rich history and strengths in basic, transplantation and clinical research in the host-pathogen relationships centred on studies of infectious disease, immunology and inflammation, cancer, transplantation and the host microbiome. The Department has approximately 40,000 square feet of laboratory space and access to many core facilities located at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, and the Robarts Research Institute. The Department has a strong undergraduate program including Honors programs in Microbiology & Immunology and Biochemistry of Infection and Immunity. It also has an innovative graduate program consisting of both basic and clinically relevant aspects of microbiology, immunology and cancer. In addition, the Department provides teaching to medical, dental, nursing, science and health science students through undergraduate programs in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and the Faculties of Science and Health Sciences.

The successful applicant will have a demonstrated and ongoing record of success in research, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and external grant funding, as well as documented excellence in communication and teaching. The new Chair will be expected to support the research, educational and interdisciplinary initiatives of the Department, to help maintain the positive forward momentum of the Department and to develop new initiatives in research/scholarship. The successful candidate will be expected to strengthen bridges across both clinical and basic science departments and Institutes with a view towards developing translational opportunities. The Chair will be expected to develop and execute an energetic, innovative and forward-thinking strategic plan in keeping with the vision of the Department as a world-class leader in research and scholarship. We are seeking a talented leader to lead the Department of Microbiology & Immunology into its next phase of academic and basic excellence. He/she will commit to the primary goal of harnessing the considerable energy, passion, expertise and potential present to elevate the Department’s collective academic performance. The successful applicant will need to exhibit core qualities including integrity and effectiveness as a mentor, and communicator and model a progressive leadership style that fosters a culture of respect, equity and inclusivity.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent. The position of Chair is for a five-year term, normally renewable once. A successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure as appropriate in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Compensation for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
