The Department of Computer Science of KU Leuven, Belgium offers several positions for a postdoctoral fellow in the domain of natural language processing. KU Leuven (https://www.kuleuven.be/english/) is an institution for research and education with international appeal and ranks among the best 50 universities worldwide! The postdoctoral fellow will perform his or her research at the Language Intelligence and Information Retrieval lab (https://liir.cs.kuleuven.be), which is directed by Prof. Marie-Francine Moens and which is a member of the KU Leuven AI Institute (https://ai.kuleuven.be) and the KU Leuven ELLIS Unit. The European Lab for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) (https://ellis.eu) promotes basic research in machine learning and modern AI. The lab is also a member of the Leuven Brain Institute.
Responsibilities
1) Postdoctoral position in Machine Reading Comprehension and Natural Language Understanding

We are looking for a colleague with expertise and a large interest in machine reading comprehension and natural language understanding. Current deep neural networks fail when processing long discourses such as lengthy narratives or dialogues demanding for novel representation learning methods that might integrate vectors with continuous values and discrete symbols. The research is financed by the ERC Advanced Grant CALCULUS (https://calculus-project.eu/) (Commonsense and Anticipation enriched Learning of Continuous representations sUpporting Language UnderStanding – Horizon 2020 – 788506).

2) Postdoctoral position in Memory Storage and Retrieval Inspired by Biological Brains

We are looking for a colleague with a large interest in designing and implementing memories inspired by memories found in biological brains. Research topics among others include the format of the memory, memory replay, retrieval from memory, generalization, abstraction, and prototyping. The memories are evaluated in natural language processing tasks such as understanding of a long discourse or multi-document summarization.

3) Postdoctoral position in the Joint Processing of Language and Visual Data

We are looking for a colleague with expertise and a large interest in the joint processing of language and visual data for the benefit of natural language processing (e.g., text summarization, machine translation, information extraction, common sense reasoning, multimodal coreference resolution, etc.). Research topics among others include visual grounding, integration of visual features in natural language processing tasks, and disentangled sparse representations of visual data that align with language content.

Profile
  • The successful candidate has (or is near completion of) a PhD in Computer Science.
  • He or she has excellent knowledge of the fundamental principles, algorithms and methods of machine learning.
  • He or she has an outstanding track record of publications in relevant international peer-reviewed A ranked conferences and in journals with high impact factor.
Offer
  • A postdoctoral fellowship for 2 years.
  • A competitive wage and yearly budget to attend conferences.
  • The opportunity for personal development beyond research including the supervision of master and PhD students and the possibility to contribute to teaching.
  • Access to our deep learning cluster which contains the latest GPU hardware.
