Summary of the work

Reporting to the Director, Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc), with a dotted line reporting to the Director, Marketing and Communications, Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), the digital communications assistant works collaboratively as a member of the BHSc team to complete a component of the strategic communication plan which corresponds to the overall vision of the FHS. The digital communications assistant helps with the development of story projects and recommends visual content for social media. The incumbent will combine strong technical skills in web communications, social media and emerging technologies related to the BHSc and other related websites and digital communication channels.

This position requires flexible hours and may require evenings and weekends to attend and promote BHSc events.

Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Help create projects that meet BHSc’s communication and marketing needs by making suggestions and recommendations.
• Meets measurable goals, recommends student audience, potential and current tactics and messages.
• Assisted in the coordination of media relations activities, including media events and interviews with various audiences and stakeholders.
• Tracks FHS and BHSc events for written or digital promotional purposes.
• Support efforts to build and enhance the image of Queens through communications by making suggestions and writing content that can be integrated into the appropriate channels. Works within the BHSc team to recommend opportunities for new stories.
• Writes stories for social platforms, tailoring them to the stakeholder group and audience, including Facebook, Instagram and the BHSc blog.
• Ensures compliance with the standards for draft written communications (printed and online) for the BHSc program through consistent use of language and reference to the Queen’s Style Guide. Collaborates with BHSc program staff, FHS marketing and communications staff, and university-wide staff to ensure consistency of draft messages as required.
• Assisted in the collection of website analytics from social media accounts and the website.
• Contributes to a content update strategy by making suggestions and helping to implement revisions to ensure that all digital communication channels and BHSc content are up to date and relevant.
• Adheres to BHSc and Faculty of Health Sciences policies, guidelines and models.
• Provides minor troubleshooting for the BHSc website, escalating more complex issues if necessary.
• Undertake other delegated tasks in support of the program.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
• Two-year post-secondary program in a related field.
• Two to three years of experience in marketing, communications, public relations or a related field.
• Experience writing in a variety of formats (print, digital, social) would be an asset.
• Knowledge of social media and its uses in communication would be an asset.
• An understanding of accessibility issues and federal and provincial electronic communications laws regarding accessibility, privacy, electronic security and anti-spam would be an asset.
• Knowledge of a wide range of Queen’s University policies and procedures and / or experience working in a post-secondary education environment considered an asset.

SPECIAL SKILLS:
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with a wide range of individuals across campus to establish and maintain strong relationships.
• Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office, and willingness and ability to learn new software.
• Attention to detail and precision.
• Skills in photography would be an asset.
• Results-oriented; ability to work independently and in a team and to take initiatives,
• Able to manage and prioritize several tasks effectively, ensuring deadlines are met.
• Knowledge of university procedures, policies and regulations.

DECISION MAKING:
• Makes content recommendations for various communication vehicles in coordination with the director.
• Determines the content of draft correspondence and promotional material in coordination with the director.
• Decides when new information or sensitive issues require additional measures, such as distributing information, fact checking or consulting with the appropriate manager.
• Determines when to refer a problem / question to the director or staff of the BHSc program.
• Determines work priorities to ensure effective execution of responsibilities.
