Researcher / Project Researcher In Quantitative Vibrational Spectroscopic Imaging

JOB DESCRIPTION

LUT School of Engineering Science is looking for a researcher or a project researcher in quantitative vibrational spectroscopic imaging.

Laser spectroscopy and spectroscopic imaging technologies have developed at a significant pace during the past decades. They provide new insights into chemical changes and the nanoscale distribution of species in complex materials of both organic and inorganic samples. By probing the spectroscopic signatures of the vibrational properties of molecules, the presence, distribution, and character of molecules and supramolecular structures may be simultaneously determined.

The research will focus on developing advanced spectral data analysis and imaging methods needed in vibrational laser spectroscopy and imaging. An open-access online platform will be developed for the application of the analysis methods. We are now looking for a researcher to work on this project, a part of Quantitative Chemically-Specific Imaging Infrastructure for Material and Life Sciences funded by the Academy of Finland.

A researcher is expected to have a doctoral degree in a field relevant to the position, such as D.Sc. or Ph.D. in physics, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, computer science and engineering, or applied mathematics.

A project researcher is expected to have a higher university degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in the above-mentioned fields.

The work involves conducting independent research under the supervision of Associate Professor Erik Vartiainen and Professor Lasse Lensu.

Desired skills:

  • Knowledge on vibrational microscopies, e.g. spontaneous Raman scattering microscopy or multiplex coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy.
  • Knowledge on hyper-spectral imagery, signal processing, statistical analysis, and algorithm development. A background in modern data-driven analysis methods is considered as an advantage.
  • Strong programming skills with Matlab, Python, and/or C++.
  • Good oral and writing skills in English.

The employment relationship is fixed-term for a two-year term with a six-month trial period. The work will start in September 2020 or as agreed with the employer. The salary is determined based on the salary system of Finnish universities.
