SOFTWARE DEVELOPER IN
HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING

Fraunhofer FHR in Wachtberg near Bonn is part of the large Fraunhofer Society and one of the leading and largest European research institutes in the field of high-frequency physics and radar technology with one of the world’s most powerful space observation radars.

Against the background of the increasing threat posed by space debris to satellites, the “Array-Based Radar Imaging” (ARB) department develops radar systems for space surveillance. As a further development of the GESTRA space surveillance radar, which has already been successfully set up, further optimized transmission and reception systems will be developed in the GESTRA project landscape over the next few years.

The radar processor software to be further developed is to determine specific orbit parameters of satellites or space debris from the raw radar data. The project is still at the very beginning and offers you many opportunities to bring your own ideas into our software landscape. You will work in an interdisciplinary software team that is closely networked with the signal processing team. Software development plays a central role in the project, which results in exciting insights and interfaces to the other working groups.

Your tasks are:

  • Design, implementation and testing of complex software packages for signal processing in the GESTRA EUSST and networking projects
  • Design and implementation of mathematical algorithms for GPU-based clusters
  • Mathematical modeling for the evaluation of processing results
  • Critical reflection on the existing applications and development of creative solutions
  • Long-term development of expertise at the interface between signal processing and concrete HPC implementation
  • Preparation, publication and presentation of the work results to the client and at conferences

What to bring with you

  • Completed academic university degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics or a comparable qualification
  • Good knowledge of high-performance computing as well as common HPC software tools (e.g. CUDA, MPI, OpenACC)
  • Good knowledge of C ++ (other programming languages are an advantage)
  • Experience in MATLAB for the prototyping of algorithms
  • First experience in Qt and general software development approaches as well as working under Linux would be an advantage
  • Practical experience in collaborative working environments
  • Good written and spoken German and English

What you can expect

  • Participation in THE space surveillance technology of the future, which is scientifically state-of-the-art and unique in Europe
  • Open and friendly working environment in a professional research facility equipped with state-of-the-art equipment
  • Participation in a demanding R&D project with a high level of practical relevance
  • Regular exchange and contact with specialist colleagues
  • Above-average, sponsored further training culture with a wide range of options for personal development, e. B. by participating in trade fairs, specialist conferences, workshops and seminars as well as internal funding programs
  • Flexible working hours for a good work-life balance (39-hour week, flexitime system and bridging days)
  • Additional variable remuneration components based on performance and success
  • Company pension scheme (VBL) and job ticket
  • Nearby canteen and shops
  • Family-friendly culture, office with children, support from external service providers in emergency care for children and relatives
