Category of Appointment: Human Geography
Rank/Position Title: Assistant Professor
Start Date: January 1, 2021 or July 1, 2021
Closing Date: Complete applications will be considered starting October 1 and continue until the position is filled

About the Position:

Applications for this position are invited from scholars doing exciting research who are eager to contribute to our Human Geography program. Our faculty is a community of scholars concerned about the climate crisis, inequality, colonialism, and social and environmental justice, and we seek a dynamic colleague to complement and expand existing program strengths. DGES is a collegial, research-intensive group strongly committed to ensuring equity and expanding diversity, both in terms of the backgrounds of our faculty and in our curricular offerings for Carleton’s wide-ranging student body. Special consideration will be given to applicants who increase departmental faculty diversity and those with a demonstrated commitment to recruiting and mentoring students from underrepresented groups.

Topic area is open. Candidates should explain how their work will add to or extend departmental expertise and contribute to our programs. Research and/or teaching that addresses changing environments will be viewed as an asset, although this is by no means required; applicants who can enhance our Human Geography program and associated programs, particularly Northern Studies and/or Environmental Studies, will be given special consideration. Across topic areas, we are especially interested in candidates who do community-engaged field research and grapple seriously with its ethical, epistemological, and/or methodological dimensions, and those who employ creative pedagogies and/or heterodox theoretical frameworks, such as feminist, decolonial, non-Western, or Indigenous approaches, among others. We welcome applicants with unconventional intellectual trajectories and interdisciplinary training that would enrich DGES and our Human Geography offerings.

About the Academic Unit:

DGES delivers five undergraduate programs (BA/BSc Geography, BA Environmental Studies, BA BSc Geomatics), three undergraduate minors (Environmental Studies, Urban Studies, and Geomatics), and three Geography graduate programs (MA, MSc PhD). We also house the interdisciplinary Master’s in Northern Studies. We are home to 400 undergraduate majors and 70 graduate students.

Qualifications:

Applicants must: hold a PhD in Geography or related discipline by the appointment start; demonstrate dedication to excellent, engaging, and innovative teaching and research; and show commitment to developing a robust program of research and scholarship in their areas of study, along with building capacity to attract, support, and mentor graduate students in Human Geography. The successful applicant will be equipped to contribute to teaching in Human Geography and related programs as relevant, and to other DGES teaching, research, and service areas as appropriate.

Applicants should consult our website for details on current research activities and courses, and Carleton websites on strategic planning and strategic priorities.

Application Instructions:

Applications must include the following, electronically in one PDF file: 1) cover letter (include declaration if you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada); 2) curriculum vitae; 3) teaching portfolio including relevant experience, evidence of teaching innovation and performance, and pedagogical approaches to teaching; 4) statement on contributions to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (for tips on writing this, see  resources such as https://ofew.berkeley.edu/guidelines-applicants-writing-statements); 5) summary statement of research interests and experience; 6) up to three research publication reprints; and 7) contact details for three referees.
