OVERVIEWThis position is based in Ainsworth, NE, with the geographic accountability region of Cherry, Brown, Rock, Holt, Boyd, and Keya Paha Counties. This is a twelve-month, non-tenure track position. The focus for this educator is Food, Nutrition, and Health (FNH) with an expected demonstrated expertise in obesity prevention, nutrition, and health behavior change, and creating environments supportive of well-being and food systems. The target audience is ages 0-18 and the adults in families, communities, and environments who influence those ages. The outcomes of this focused Extension professional include: 1) Individual behavior patterns and environments that reduce youth obesity and improve human well-being, and 2) A safe and diverse food supply with choices/access for people focused on health. Health Behavior change and translation of research should be evident in their primary responsibility of program development and delivery. Nebraska faces the challenges of a high prevalence of obesity, foodborne illness, and disparities in food access and health status. Addressing interrelated determinants is key to improving health, well-being, health disparities and quality of life. The Food, Nutrition, and Health professional will contribute to the integrated (extension, research, and teaching) land-grant mission of IANR as a scholar and citizen in community engagement and healthy humans.     • Works in an inter-disciplinary team environment with extension professionals, researchers, and other partners to translate and teach the latest research-based information.
    • Uses entrepreneurial practices to secure grants, program fees and partnerships to leverage the extension educational program’s resource base and reach.
    • Partners with research faculty to engage in action research that can be applied to educational programming.
    • Practices effective extension scholarship by conducting needs assessments, identifying priorities, measuring program impact, and reporting results at professional meetings and in professional publications.
    • Develops a professional development plan to enhance and maintain professional expertise in obesity prevention, health and well-being, individual and community food systems, and extension pedagogy.

Your Mission:

Obesity and its metabolic complications such as type 2 diabetes plague our healthcare system. While recent advances in pharmacotherapy are promising to treat obesity, cost-effective and widely available solutions are lacking. Interestingly, dietary intake of special lipids called medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), which are fatty acids consisting of 8–12 carbon atoms, has been shown to increase energy expenditure, to limit food intake, and to improve insulin resistance. We very recently found that intake of a small amount of MCFAs can help prevent insulin resistance in humans overfed with a high-fat diet. Despite these diverse systemic metabolic benefits, the mechanisms for how MCFAs achieve these effects are completely unknown.

Using cell culture techniques and in vivo experimentation with transgenic mice, it will be your mission to investigate the mode-of-action for how MCFAs benefit health. This work has the potential to uncover new pathways within or among different organs that can be discreetly targeted to elicit distinct, personalized metabolic benefits to treat and/or prevent metabolic diseases.

  • Experience in conducting animal studies within the area of nutrition or metabolism
  • Experience in working with cell culture
  • Laboratory skills related to metabolism, biochemistry, and molecular biology

The Newman Fellow will be based in the Sutherland School of Law, ranked one of the top 100 universities for law in the world.

UCD Sutherland School of Law is a leading Law School in Ireland. It is recognised for the quality of its research, its degree programmes and its wider impact in Ireland and internationally.  It currently hosts three European Research Council projects and has a vibrant community of early career and established researchers. Project Background: This project is seeking a postdoctoral fellow with experience and expertise in competition law. The object of the project is to appraise to what extent the goals and rules of competition law should be reconceptualized considering either the role of competition law in defining and challenging the power of actors in the digital space or the role of competition law in realising the societal objective of sustainability. The aim of this forward-looking project is to contribute to ongoing debates on competition law and its purpose in society.

Successful candidates shall receive an annual salary of no less than RMB 1 million. They will be eligible for a landmark achievement award of RMB 360,000 in the first year in recognition of their contribution to faculty building. Moreover, selected candidates shall also receive a relocation allowance of RMB 5 million, a research start-up fund ranging from RMB 16 million to 21 million (which includes national funding and government funding from Jiangsu province), a minimum of 300 square meters of research space, and will serve as tenured professors and doctoral supervisors.

Xing Yao Leading Scholars (Class A)

Successful candidates shall receive an annual salary of no less than RMB 650,000. They will be eligible for a landmark achievement award of RMB 180,000 in the first year in recognition of their contribution to faculty building. Moreover, selected candidates shall also receive a relocation allowance of RMB 3-4 million, a research start-up fund ranging from RMB 5.5 million to 8 million (which includes national funding and government funding from Jiangsu provincial), a minimum of 150 square meters of research space, and will serve as professor and doctoral supervisor.

Xing Yao Leading Scholars (Class B)

Successful candidates shall receive an annual salary of no less than RMB 600,000, a relocation allowance of RMB 1-2 million, a research start-up fund of RMB 3 million, a research space covering 100 square meters, and will serve as professor and doctoral supervisor.

Xing Yao Innovative Scholars

Successful candidates shall receive an annual salary of no less than RMB 450,000, a relocation allowance of RMB 500,000-800,000, a research start-up fund of RMB 2 million, a research space covering 60 square meters, and will serve as distinguished research fellow and doctoral supervisor.

There is no limit on funding for significant scientific and technological breakthroughs. All positions are entitled to receive CPU’s landmark achievement award with no upper limit.

The position will associate to our Additives and Chemistry Group in the laboratory of Advanced fibers. The group is well established internationally in polymer additive chemistry. A more recent focus of the group is the development of sustainable polymers. To strengthen activities in this area, we investigate more sustainable polymer processing routes. The development of novel polyesters especially from bio-based monomers is increasingly important for society. Most polyesters are sensitive to humidity and heat and their processing is thus challenging. To mitigate these limitation, we seek to combine synthesis and processing in new ways. This position offers unique possibilities to synthesize polymers via ring opening polymerization of monomers from solid supports, that ultimately aims at polymer fiber formation in a one-step process.

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Chemistry

In the interfacial layers between solid and liquid materials, several of the most important processes occur in both living and artificial systems. The properties of molecules can drastically change when they are in interfacial layers, which can be exploited for, among other things, detection and efficient catalysis. Often, models with thousands of atoms are required to describe this type of system. At the same time, many processes of interest depend on a quantum chemical description, such as chemical reactions or the interaction between molecules and light. We are interested in two specific systems: molecules on the surface of large proteins linked to Alzheimer's disease, and molecular catalysts on the surface of electrodes, for example, in the production of hydrogen. The size of these systems is far beyond what conventional quantum chemical software can handle. In collaboration between the Department of Theoretical Chemistry and Biology and the supercomputer center PDC at KTH, a new quantum chemical software has been developed that is tailored for modern supercomputers. This enables studies of systems at least 10 times larger, allowing us, for the first time, to approach the processes described above with a full quantum chemical description. The doctoral positions involve studying the systems, testing the software on national and European supercomputers, and developing simpler methods necessary to describe the systems in question. In both projects, collaboration with experimental research groups will occur regularly.

Supervision: Mårten Ahlquist and Patrick Norman are proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.

Selection

PhD position in ultrafast dynamics in perovskite structures

The Ultrafast Dynamics Group (Prof. Steven Johnson) in the Department of Physics of ETH Zürich has an open PhD position.

Project background

The project aims to investigate ultrafast dynamics in perovskite structures, in particular SrTiO3, KTaO3, and LaAlO3.  These materials display a strong interplay of different degrees of freedom that determine their macroscopic properties. Crucially, the use of strong, ultrashort laser pulses in the THz, mid-infrared, or optical frequency range can be exploited to selectively excite electronic or vibrational degrees of freedom, thus offering a convenient platform for the control of these materials. Our goal is to study aspects of electron-phonon and phonon-phonon coupling triggered by ultrashort laser pulses using a combination of ultrafast table-top spectroscopy techniques and time-resolved x-ray-based experiments. This project will be based in Prof. Steven Johnson’s Ultrafast Dynamics Group at ETH Zürich and conducted under Dr. Martina Basini´s leadership. X-ray measurements will take place at large-scale facilities both in Switzerland and abroad.

Job description

This position requires the design, construction, modification, and use of ultrafast laser pump-probe setups to perform time-resolved studies on a variety of perovskite materials, under the supervision and guidance of experienced researchers. You will be expected to understand and apply a range of concepts from modern optics to the generation and use of ultrashort pulses with frequencies ranging from the THz to PHz (optical) regimes. You will also be expected to contribute significantly to x-ray-based measurements of time-resolved dynamics at large-scale facilities, which may involve travel abroad.  Your tasks will extend also to the modelling and interpretation of the resulting data in collaboration with others, and the preparation of scientific publications based on this work.  You will also be required to contribute to the teaching of bachelor-level and master-level students in the framework of course assistance and the supervision of short projects. The starting dates are from March 2023.

Your profile

You should:
  • hold a Master’s degree preferably in physics, alternatively in material sciences
  • have a strong background in condensed matter physics is required
  • have previous experience with ultrafast optical or x-ray experiments
  • have proficiency in oral and written English and must be enthusiastic, creative and self-motivated.  Strong teamwork skills are vital.

The ultrafast dynamics group is focused on the study of highly nonequilibrium dynamics in solid-state systems, with the aims to better understand and even control the properties of materials with higher speeds and efficiencies that is possible using more conventional methods.  A unique feature of our group is a strong connection with the SwissFEL free electron laser, which offers world-leading capabilities to use femtosecond and even attosecond pulses of x-rays to construct atomic-scale "movies" of how materials evolve in real-time.  We combine this unique source with state-of-the-art ultrafast laser technologies in other wavelength ranges extending from optical to THz, which allows us to study how materials can be manipulated by coherent light pulses. Our team is highly multicultural and offers flexible working arrangements. As a PhD student, you will be able to enroll in a wide variety of courses to deepen your knowledge of science and engineering, as well as to take advantage of career mentoring resources.  While the bulk of your lab and teaching activity will be on the ETH Hoenggerberg campus, the x-ray-based experiments will be performed at the nearby Paul Scherrer Institute and a variety of international facilities in places such as Germany, the USA, Japan, and South Korea. The Janet Thornton Fellowship is open to scientists who:

Salary:

The objective of this PostDoc is to develop methods for the analysis and visualization of data collected from a new Photon-Counting Detector Computer Tomograph (PCD-CT) at the Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization (CMIV) at Linköping university. It offers new opportunities in imaging the coronary arteries and assessment of cardiac function. This technology is groundbreaking and currently limited to very few centers in the world. The larger context of this project is to develop a pipeline for the generation of personalized heart models improving the treatment of cardiovascular diseases in the future.

You will be part of the team that develops methods to supports an efficient and effective analysis of the data for diagnosis and model building, integrated into a visual data browser with high-quality rendering. Your part involves researching extensions to commonly used methods, like volume rendering or flow visualization, to this new kind of data.

This position is part of a joint collaboration between the two largest research programs in Sweden, the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) and the SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS), with the ultimate goal of solving ground-breaking research questions across disciplines. The SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) is a 12-year initiative that focuses on data-driven research, within fields essential for improving the people´s lives, detecting and treating diseases, protecting biodiversity and creating sustainability. Within the WASP-DDLS financed project “Huge Complex Diagnostic Imaging Data”, two postdoc will work jointly on a pipeline for the generation of personalized models from huge complex imaging data.

Qualifications

To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree.  This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.

It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.

We are looking for an experienced researcher with a background in applied visualization and rendering. The candidate should hold a PhD degree in Computer Science or a related subject. The candidate should have excellent programming skills in c/c++ or similar, and good knowledge of graphics programming. Fluency in spoken and written English is beneficial. Since the position is on the interface between image analysis and visualization strong skills in interdisciplinary communication and collaboration are required.

We are looking for a PhD student in Visualization and Media Technology with focus on Scientific Visualization

Your work assignments

This Ph.D. position is motivated by the need for reliable visualization and data analysis methods that support understanding of the increasing amount of scientific data, e.g. from image acquisition modalities or scientific simulations. Efficient algorithms are at the core of most of these data analysis and visualization applications. The focus of this Ph.D. will be developing efficient and reliable algorithms that arise in the context of topological data analysis and rendering for the visualization of large amounts of data. Close cooperation with other visualization projects in various application areas is expected.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at a Master’s level in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a closely related subject or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in the respective area.  Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

The candidate should have excellent programming skills, preferably C++, and good knowledge of graphics programming and enjoy solving algorithmic challenges Fluency in spoken and written English is also a requirement. Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous: experiences in applied visualization, topological data analysis, and computer graphics.

The scientific visualization unit is a part of the division Media and Information Technology at The department of science and Technology (ITN) at Linköping University. The focus is on research ranging from basic research questions in scientific visualization, with a focus on topological data analysis, to a wide range of application driven questions. A primary interest is developing reliable methods based on rigid mathematical foundations targeting visualization needs from specific applications.

The employment

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of-systems. Within the WASP-DDLS financed project “Enlightening biology: bridging time-resolved experiments in silico”, two postdocs will work jointly on designing visual analysis methods with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of light-induced biological processes.

Large-scale simulations rooted in quantum mechanics are currently being developed to understand light-induced processes in biological systems that produce complex, feature-rich, and high-dimensional data in addition to traditional molecular dynamics trajectories. However, extracting meaningful information from this data that provides new insight is still an open challenge. The goal of this postdoc position is to explore and develop a variety of novel analysis and visualization techniques with the aim to capture meaningful summaries of, and the features within, this complex high-dimensional data. Techniques from topological data analysis (TDA) will be extensively used to summarize and define robust comparison metrics for scalar and multifield data, as well as for tasks such as extraction, comparison, and tracking of features within. From the perspective of visualization, we aim to develop novel methods to combine the sub-fields of molecular and multifield visualization. We anticipate that our innovative methods will pave the way for a new, independent sub-area within the field of scientific visualization research, with significant potential for growth in the future.

As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.
