The Department of History, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University invites highly qualified applicants for an Assistant or Associate Professor position for the Mackenzie-Papineau Memorial Professorship in Modern Spanish History. This is an endowed tenure-track appointment to the Professorial Stream to commence 1 July 2024.

Funding for this position comes from the Mackenzie-Papineau Memorial Fund, named after a battalion of Canadian soldiers on the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War. York has long offered scholarship and instruction on the Spanish Civil War, which included exploring the role the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion played in the war. This endowment will also support scholarship, research and teaching in modern Spanish history. For further details, please see Mackenzie-Papineau Chair 

Candidate Qualifications:

Degree: PhD in History or a related discipline by 1 July 2024 is required.

Scholarship:

  • A coherent and well-articulated program of research and specialization in Modern Spanish History.
  • A record or evident promise of generating innovative, substantive, rigorous, and as appropriate, externally funded research and/or research creation.
  • A record or evident promise of making influential contributions and demonstrating excellence in the field demonstrated by, for example, a strong record of publications (or forthcoming publications) evidenced in monographs with major presses or articles in significant journals in the field; presentations at major conferences; public history or community work; awards and accolades; a record of external funding from major funding bodies; and strong recommendations from referees of high standing. York particularly values scholarship that emphasizes new themes and methodologies in Modern Spanish History and that will provide or lead to national and international research leadership.

Teaching:

  • A record or evident promise of excellence in teaching and dedication to students as demonstrated through a statement of teaching interests; a record of teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; and strong letters of reference.
  • Suitability for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, given that the position will involve graduate teaching and supervision.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach a course on the Spanish Civil War and contribute to the teaching of Modern European History at all levels.
