Associate Professor in Biological Chemistry/Cell Biology

University of Stavanger is looking for an Associate Professor in Biological Chemistry/Cell Biology at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Chemistry, Bioscience and Environmental Engineering.

The strategic research area for our Department is One Health, encompassing human, animal, plant, and environmental health.

We are looking for a candidate preferably with expertise in the following research areas: cell biology on a model organism, preferably zebrafish. Research experience in omics approaches to address organismal areas such as genetics, developmental biology, epigenetics, endocrinology is preferable.

Applicants with a strong scientific and educational experience in the molecular and cellular biology field are encouraged to apply as well. Candidates with expertise in bioinformatics both in teaching and research will be preferred.

Within the subject area, teaching to Bachelor, Master’s and Ph.D. students, as well as research and dissemination of results, is expected at a high international level.

The development/use of digital learning methods will be included in the position.

Tenured Associate Professors are encouraged to apply for promotion to full Professor, according to regulations.

The Department of Chemistry, Bioscience and Environmental Engineering research interests feeds into our One Health ambition based on our scientific expertise and strengths. Chemistry is important to understand life and the environment at the molecular level. A more sustainable approach to develop chemicals tailored to improve health and lessen the impact on the environment is key. The understanding of life at an organismal and cellular level and the interaction in whole ecosystems is the remit of biology. The provision of healthy food by means of a more sustainable agriculture and fisheries is vital. Chemical and biological understanding of natural systems is essential to understand human impact on our planet. Environmental engineering offers technological solutions to remedy environmental issues for a sustainable future.

The positions are associated with the Research group in Biological Chemistry. The research activities in our team cover a broad research area from cancer biology, plant biochemistry, evolutionary biochemistry, molecular parasitology, toxicology, ecotoxicology, environmental monitoring and systems biology. We deliver at an internationally competitive level and we expect our new colleagues to complement and enhance our research portfolio.

The department also supports the development of partnerships with businesses and other research institutions to contribute within the One Health strategy.

Qualification requirements

We are seeking candidates with a PhD in a relevant discipline for this announcement.

The candidates must:

  • document qualifications as an independent researcher at international level within the research areas mentioned above and fit within our One Health strategy.
  • document adequate scientific comprehensiveness to be able to teach the central courses at Bachelor and Master level.
  • preferably have supervised students in their thesis work up to Ph.D. level or at least have experience with co-supervision at Ph.D level.
  • have a track record of obtaining competitive research funding and experience in leading research projects.
  • have a strong publication record in international peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • be able to document pedagogical and didactic skills relating to Higher Education and have taught at Higher Education level. If you do not meet the competence requirement you must complete a university pedagogy course within a period of two years of the appointment start date.We offer basic pedagogic courses for university lecturers
  • be able to evaluate and improve teaching and supervision, and to develop relevant study programmes.
  • have good command of both spoken and written English language.

The working and teaching languages are Norwegian and English. If you do not have a good command of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, you must acquire Norwegian language skills equivalent to level B2 within a period of three years from the appointment start date. We offer to cover Norwegian courses.

General information

Your application will be assessed by an expert committee. In the expert assessment, emphasis will be placed on submitted scientific works and documented teaching competence. The committe will also assess your experience with popularisation/dissemination activities, university politics and administration, and any other documented qualifications relevant to the position.

If you do not satisfy key parts of the qualification requirements, you may have your application rejected before applications are submitted to the expert committee for assessment.

Based on the expert committee’s statement, relevant applicants will be invited to an interview and a teaching demonstration before any recommendations are made.

It is a prerequisite that the appointee has a residence which enables him or her to be present at/available to the academic community during ordinary working hours.
