About the Position The School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems invites applications for Assistant Teaching Professor OR Lecturer in the discipline of Information Technology. The rank will be commensurate with candidate qualifications. this is a non-tenure track position. The candidate is expected to begin duties in January 2024. Responsibilities Include:

  • This position will involve teaching graduate courses at the master's level in the area of Information Technology and/or other courses as a function of department needs.
  • Student mentoring and advising, participation in department-level service, and course and program level assessment activities will also be required.

There is no research workload or expectation associated with this teaching position. This position is renewable based on funding availability, satisfactory performance, and department needs. This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Compensation & Benefits Commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience. This is a Faculty (FAC) position. Job/tasks description:

  • conducting standard electrochemical corrosion tests such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy or cyclic voltamperometry
  • conducting local electrochemical tests using scanning electrochemical microscopy SECM
  • conducting immersion corrosion tests and further analysis of the concentration of released metal ions
  • helping in organization of corrosion and electrochemical laboratory, including preparing purchase documents

Job Description:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the statistical aspects of clinical trials, including contribution to study design, analysis, creating and validating analysis datasets, tables, listings and figures for statistical reports. The candidate will also be required to coordinate statistical efforts across multiple research projects.

Main Duties:

  • Statistical aspects of projects, including experimental design, analysis and presentation of data, maintain consistent approaches within and across research projects, ensuring that all project-related work is carried out in accordance with SOPs and with international regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate the development of statistical analysis plans (SAP(s)), statistical programming, creation of table shells, the production of tables, listings, graphs and figures, data review and statistical analysis and/or review of those programmed by others to ensure the delivery of quality products.
  • Identify potential data problems from analytical queries and take initiative to guide the process of resolution
  • Statistical programming aspects of projects, including the execution and validation of high-quality analysis datasets, tables, listings and figures.
  • Liaise with data management team to perform data validation and cleaning of clinical database.

  • Contribute to statistical sections of integrated reports, abstract and subsequent publications.

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

  • MSc in biostatistics or a related field and 4 years (post primary degree) full-time research/industry/academic experience.
  • Previous experience in applying statistical methods in biomedical research, pharmaceutical or CRO industry experience.
  • Evidence of strong numerate/programming background (using in statistical software such as SAS, R or Stata required).
  • Ability to work with complex data.

Research Programme Description

QuNEST– Quantum Enhanced Optical Communication Network Security Doctoral Training” is hiring 11 Doctorate Candidates” to be funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks. QuNEST is a highly interdisciplinary and intersectoral Doctoral Network composed of leading academic and industrial partners. The consortium consists of six academic institutions, namely: Eindhoven University of Technology, Technical University of Denmark, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, University of L’Aquila, University of Warsaw and University of Geneva as well as the companies: ADVA Network Security, Exatel, IDQuantique, Infinera Germany, KEEQuant (SME), NKT Photonics, Nokia Bell Labs France, Telecom Italia Mobile, Quantum Optical Technologies (SME), Quantum Telecommunications Italy and VPIphotonics and involves seven different European countries. The diverse consortium provides a unique and timely opportunity to train students in quantum physics and optical communications.

The driving force for QuNEST – is to provide high-level and highly collaborative training to 11 highly achieving Doctoral Candidates. This Doctoral Network is a highly multi-disciplinary, spanning areas of quantum physics, simulations, photonics, optical transmission, Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocols, implementation security, error correction algorithms, digital signal processing, networks and control, requiring cross-disciplinary and intersectoral training targeted at creating experts in this emerging multidisciplinary field. The QuNEST Doctoral Candidates will be trained by doing research, in which they will demonstrate the potential of combining quantum and classical optical data signals in a single fiber with the aim to develop ground-breaking and commercially attractive, short-to-medium term solutions targeting European industry leadership in this highly challenging sector. QuNEST will train much-needed future scientists and engineers who will design, build, deploy and operate the next generation quantum secured optical communications infrastructure.

The Doctoral Network program is designed to follow technical, scientific, and transferable skills, enabling the next generation of young researchers/engineers with excellent skills in understanding the challenges of quantum secure optical communications. All Doctoral Candidates will carry out secondments and placements with industrial partners at the earliest possible opportunity. Transferable skills and technical workshops from industrial partners will be central to the training of the Doctoral Candidates.

About the host institution:

Founded in 1816, The University of Warsaw offers studies in several dozen of fields of arts and sciences at 1 and 2 cycle programmes, as well as at the integrated Master programmes, for postgraduate students and PhD students. The total number of students exceeds 53 thousand. University of Warsaw recognizes doctoral studies as one of its priority activities and it pursues the aim of providing PhD students with the training of high quality and expanding its pool of PhD studies programmes offered in English resulting in single or joint doctorates in partnership with European or non-European higher education establishments. University of Warsaw hosts the Centre for Quantum Optical Technologies, established in 2018 by the University of Warsaw in partnership with the University of Oxford under the International Research Agenda Programme operated by the Foundation for Polish Science. The Centr aims to explore quantum phenomena, such as superpositions and entanglement, in optical and optically controlled systems, with the long-term prospects of their practical utilisation. At present the Centre comprises of five laboratories pursuing research into quantum communication, sensing, imaging, as well as experimental development of quantum memories and fundamental aspects of quantum resources.

  • Project title: Optical signal modelling and characterization for QKD security analysis

  • Research Objectives: DC5 will investigate effects of noise and impact on security of QKD protocols. Current security analysis for QKD has been carried out using models based on single modes carrying the signal. On the other hand, modulation, propagation, and demodulation of optical signals propagating in communication systems is interlinked with a plethora of intrinsically multimode noise effects and distortions for which an effective description is required to provide a bridge to new fibers. DC5 will work to maximise information throughput in a channel with QKD signals
  • Expected Results: 1) Effective models for QKD links incorporating noise and imperfections, resulting e.g. from interchange crosstalk and distortion introduced by the modulator/detector transfer functions, 2) Practical methods to quantify the security of QKD links based on accessible characteristics of the optical signals.
  • Secondments: The doctoral candidate secondments periods are planned at VPIphotonics, ADVA Network Security, IDQuantique

Conditions of employment

  • The successful candidates should receive an estimated expected gross salary of € 2378 (an additional annual premium could be paid), in accordance with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) regulations for Doctoral Candidate researchers (the mobility allowance is included in the previous value). The salary values may change slightly due to the individual situation of the candidate. According to the MSCA regulation, if the recruited doctoral candidate has or acquires family obligations during the action duration, a family allowance will be added to the previous value, in case of eligibility.
  • The period of employment is 36 months. In addition to their individual scientific projects, all fellows will benefit from further continuing education, which includes secondments, a variety of training modules as well as transferable skills courses and attractive participation in conferences.
  • The Doctoral Candidates are expected to travel to network partners under three secondments for a typical duration of 2-6 months. Additionally, the Doctoral Candidates are expected to participate in outreach activities including, but not limited to, YouTube videos, social media updates, participation in public events and campaigns, as well as dissemination to popular press.

The selection process of invited candidates contains two phases:

In the first phase, a wide range of selection practices will be used (including expert assessment, face-to-face interviews, etc.) to evaluate the potential candidates. The selection committee for each doctoral candidate will be composed of three members: the main supervisor from the hosting institution, a QuNEST representative from another beneficiary and the future secondment manager of the doctoral candidate.

In the second phase, the selected candidate will be evaluated by QuNEST’s Recruitment, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committee. The committee addresses gender balance and diversity issues within the entire Doctoral Network and needs to approve the selected candidate.

NFDI 4Memory is one of several interdisciplinary consortia within Germany that will jointly manage the creation of a long-term research data infrastructure (Nationale Forschungsdateninfrastruktur, or "NFDI ") for the digital age with the goal of making research data systematically accessible, linked, interoperable, and, ultimately, (re-)usable in a sustainable and qualitative manner for scientific and scholarly communities in Germany and beyond. 4Memory brings together more than 80 partners from universities and research institutes, cultural heritage and memory institutions, and infrastructure facilities, united by a common set of interests, needs, and aims related to the distinct challenges faced by those disciplines that use historical methods or that rely on data requiring historical contextualization.

Within the framework of 4Memory, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Verband der Historiker und Historikerinnen Deutschlands (Association of Historians in Germany, VHD) jointly lead Task Area 5 "Data Culture. This Task Area aims at advancing the discourse on digital research data and computational methods in the field of history and, more broadly, the historically inclined humanities. A postdoctoral researcher position in experimental ion physics / physical chemistry is available at the J. Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry in Prague in close collaboration with the Quantum Optics Lab at Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic. The research project concerns the construction of a cold molecular ion source that will utilize helium nanodroplets as the cooling medium. The resulting molecular ions will be injected into a Paul trap and co-trapped with laser-cooled atomic ions. Quantum logic spectroscopy on such systems will be performed. Job description of the position:

  • conducting research activities in the field of biostatistics and bioinformatics;

Two PhD student positions are open at the “Laboratorio de Optica” at University of Murcia, Spain (http://lo.um.es) within the ACTIVA project, “Advanced Customized Technologies for Intact Vision in Ageing”, funded by EC MSCA Doctoral Network (www.kth.se/activa). ACTIVA provides international training at the interface of physics, optics and medicine to develop novel techniques facilitating intact vision with age. The PhD students should have a background in applied physics, optical engineering, vision science, electrical engineering, or a related discipline relevant for the project.

There are two separate work packages where each fellow will join: ​

- “Using infrared pulsed light as a diagnosis tool"

- “Wearable opto-electronic devices for vision correction”​

The project convenes regional academic, local government and industrial experts to deliver a new and innovative battery manufacturing L2 & L3 training programme for the West Midlands.   Extended Reality (XR), which is the focus for this role, is the case where digital data is superimposed directly into a user’s real-world visual field. XR is a fast-growing technology that is becoming an attractive form of communication in manufacturing and maintenance, particularly for the presentation of work instructions for training. You will contribute to conducting further research to evaluate the potential performance improvements that XR and training can offer. One of the industrial use case providers will be Jaguar Land Rover.   In computer science, the contributions of this Research Fellow role will be built around new methods of applying augmented reality to complex manufacturing and maintenance systems. Electrochromic devices are multilayer systems that contain the electrochromic species, the ionic conductor, the electronic conductors and the substrates. The research fellow will be responsible for identifying the best electrochromic materials to use for the construction of the respective devices as well as the best system for the construction of the electrolytic layer. All systems will be characterized by spectroscopic techniques, such as Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques, such as cyclic voltammetry. Subsequently, the research fellow will take care of the construction, characterization and implementation of the electrochromic devices and will proceed with the main functional tests. Photolithography will be the main technique with which electrochromic devices will be created in order to guarantee a homogeneous thickness even in large-sized devices

The Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre in Frankfurt am Main seeks to fill a position for the interdisciplinary project MORE STEP - Mobility at risk: Sustaining the Mongolian Steppe Ecosystem:

Researcher (m/f/d) MSc or PhD in Ecosystem Modelling

 (full-time position / part time options are available)

The MORE STEP project is a collaborative and interdisciplinary research project of Mongolian and German partners funded by BMBF. The main aim is to bring social and ecological sciences together to identify societal drivers that can lead to an ecological tipping point of the Mongolian steppe ecosystem. The objective is the early identification including possible consequences for nature and society. The project particularly emphasizes the importance of mobility of wildlife and livestock in the context of societal change and seeks to contribute to the sustainable development of the Mongolian Steppe ecosystem.

The applicant for the position here should integrate grazing into the Dynamic Global Vegetation Model LPJ-GUESS in order to assess i.) where grazing by Mongolian gazelles and livestock might be unstainable because too much of the available vegetation productivity is consumed and ii.) how climate change might influence the carrying capacity of the steppe for large herbivores. The applicant can built upon recent model developments for the integration of moving gazelles into LPJ-GUESS (Stratmann et al. 2023, published in Ecology).

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • To integrate a simplified livestock module into our coupled vegetation-herbivore model
  • To develop scenarios until 2050 for future vegetation change and forage availability under different climate change and grazing scenarios
  • To identify areas where climate change might alter the capacity of the steppe to sustain herbivores (wildlife and livestock)
  • Contribute to dissemination activities towards policy makers and stakeholders
  • Disseminate results in scientific journals and more stakeholder-oriented formats
