About the Department/College

The School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems (SICCS) at Northern Arizona University brings together interdisciplinary expertise in cybersecurity, computer science, electrical engineering, informatics, and applied data science in the context of a large high-research public university. We offer a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees on these topics, offered by roughly fifty faculty to over 1200 undergraduates and 500 graduate students associates with the school. Our core mission is to integrate interdisciplinary developments in scientific and engineering knowledge around computation, data, and systems with traditional disciplines to drive breakthroughs that address key 21st-century challenges. Our faculty are shaping the School’s ground-breaking research programs and the development of its interdiscipinary academic programs. They also have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers at institutes and centers across campus, including the Pathogen and Microbiome Institute, the Center for Bioengineering Innovation, the Merriam-Powell Center for Environmental Research, the Center for Materials Interfaces in Research and Applications (¡MIRA!), and the Center for Ecosystem Science and Society. Applied data science is a world-class research strength at NAU, providing ample opportunities for collaboration on AI/ML applications.

About the Position

The School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems invites applications for Assistant Teaching Professor OR Lecturer in the discipline of Information Technology. The rank will be commensurate with candidate qualifications. this is a non-tenure track position. The candidate is expected to begin duties in January 2024.

Responsibilities Include:

  • This position will involve teaching graduate courses at the master’s level in the area of Information Technology and/or other courses as a function of department needs.
  • Student mentoring and advising, participation in department-level service, and course and program level assessment activities will also be required.

There is no research workload or expectation associated with this teaching position. This position is renewable based on funding availability, satisfactory performance, and department needs.

This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.

Minimum Qualifications

  • For Lecturer track: an earned Masters degree in Information Technology, Information Systems, Cybersecurity or related field
  • For Assistant Teaching Professor track: an earned Ph.D. degree in in Information Technology, Information Systems, Cybersecurity or a related field, conferred by the start date of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Highly desired qualities include experience developing and teaching both in-person and online programs and courses, and leadership in curriculum development.
  • Professional (industry) experience in information technology, information systems, cybersecurity, or a closely related field.
  • Teaching experience at the college or university level, specifically in the area of information technology.
  • Demonstrated experience with instructional design, effective pedagogy, and innovative learning methodologies (will accept experience during degree program).
  • Experience with online course development and delivery (will accept experience during degree program).
  • Experience working with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU’s BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. Pre-Employment Check

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
