ACM established the Doctoral Dissertation Award program to recognize and encourage superior research and writing by doctoral candidates in computer science and engineering. The award is presented each June at the ACM Awards Banquet and is accompanied by a prize of $20,000 plus travel expenses to the banquet.  As of January 1, 2014 all winning dissertations are published exclusively in print and electronic formats as part of the ACM Books Series, which includes distribution through the ACM Digital Library.  Honorable Mention(s) may also be awarded, with a prize of $10,000 shared among recipients.

Eligibility

Eligibility requirements updated November 2019.

Nominations are considered on a yearly eligibility cycle that opens October 1st and ends the following September 30th. A nomination is for a single dissertation; related dissertations cannot be combined in a single nomination. Only the accepted final version of a nominated Ph.D. dissertation will be considered, and it must have been filed with the writer’s institution during the eligibility cycle. Only the writer’s Ph.D. advisor may nominate a dissertation, and a dissertation may be nominated only once. Only one nomination may be submitted per institution per eligibility cycle, unless the institution granted more than 10 PhD’s in computing-related fields during that cycle, in which case two dissertations may be nominated. Nominations are welcomed from any country, but the dissertation version submitted for consideration must be in English. The deadline for submission of nominations is October 31st (one month after eligibility cycle’s end), unless a dissertation requires translation to English, in which case the deadline is November 30th (two months after the eligibility cycle’s end).

Next Deadline

October 31, 2023- End of Day, Anywhere on Earth (AoE), UTC -12

November 30, 2023 - End of Day, Anywhere on Earth (AoE), UTC-12, for dissertations being translated into English.

Selection Criteria

Dissertations will be reviewed for technical depth and significance of the research contribution, potential impact on theory and practice, and quality of presentation.

Submissions

Nominations for the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award should be submitted using the online nomination form.  Make sure to select the Doctoral Dissertation Award in the dropdown box at the top.  Guidelines for nominators and endorsers can be found here.   Each nomination involves several components:

  • Name, address, phone number, and email address of the nominator (the student’s thesis advisor)
  • Name, address, and email address of the candidate (person being nominated).  Affiliation should be the name of the school.
  • Suggested citation if the candidate is selected.  This should be a concise statement (maximum of 25 words) describing the key technical or professional accomplishment for which the candidate merits this award.  Note that the final wording for awardees will be at the discretion of the Award Committee.
  • Nomination statement (200-300 words in length) addressing why the candidate should receive this award.  This should address the significance of the dissertation, not simply repeat the information in the abstract.
  • Copy of the dissertation, together with a copyright transfer form http://www.acm.org/publications/policies/copyright-and-license-forms filled out by the candidate and assigning exclusive publication rights to ACM (select either the copyright or license form).  Copyright will revert to the author if it is not selected for publication.  The copyright form can be attached as the last page of the dissertation in your pdf upload.
  • Endorsement letters.  The nomination must include an endorsement letter from the department head.  In addition, at least 3, and not more than 5, supporting letters should be included from experts in the field who can provide additional insights or evidence of the dissertation’s impact.  (The nominator/advisor may not write a letter of support.)  Each letter should include the name, address, and telephone number of the endorser.  The nominator should collect the letters and bundle them for submission.  The endorsement letter and supporting letters can be combined in one file in your pdf upload.

For questions on the above, please contact us at acm-awards@acm.org, or Jade Morris, ACM Awards Committee Liaison.  ACM's conflict-of-interest guidelines apply to all award nominations.

Centre for Energy Resources Engineering (CERE) at DTU Chemistry is seeking talented postdoctoral researchers to contribute to our exciting CO2 storage research in the following projects:

CompReact: Compositional simulation of reactive transport in CO2 storage

In this project, we aim to advance CO2 storage simulation technology by combining state-of-the-art equilibrium calculation algorithms with compositional simulation. We intend to take advantage of the recent development in simultaneous chemical and phase equilibrium calculation to improve the speed and reliability of CO2 storage simulation significantly. The candidate will work on integrating the novel chemical and phase equilibrium calculation algorithm into an in-house compositional simulator to simulate CO2 storage in both saline aquifers and depleted petroleum reservoirs. This requires robust and efficient calculation of multiphase equilibrium in dynamic simulation. The developed simulator will be applied to analyze both near-wellbore and reservoir-scale problems. It will also be an objective to integrate the relevant simulation methods in the advanced CO2 storage simulation software GEOSX (www.geosx.org/) through a collaboration with the current developers of GEOSX. We expect that the project will provide a new paradigm for performing compositional simulations for various underground CO2 storage processes. The project is a part of the INNO-CCUS partnership (www.inno-ccus.dk).

CO2plus: Phase behavior of CO2+X in CO2 storage

Our second project focuses on understanding the phase behavior of CO2 with different impurities or fluids at storage sites. We aim to acquire systematic knowledge and develop modeling approaches to analyze the complex phase behavior during CO2 injection and storage. The project involves experimental measurement, phase behavior modeling, and integration of the developed models into simulation analysis of injection risks and storage issues. The project is under the Innovation Fund Denmark’s Grand Solutions program.

The CERE group at DTU Chemistry possesses extensive expertise in both experimental measurement and modelling of high-pressure phase equilibrium and thermophysical properties. Furthermore, the group excels in development of efficient phase equilibrium calculation algorithms for compositional simulations. Both projects are supported by robust consortia of industrial and academic partners, ensuring that the high-level research remains relevant and applicable in real-world contexts.

Responsibilities and qualifications

Each of the two projects has one postdoc position.

The postdoc in CompReact will work on the improvement of the calculation algorithms for multiphase reactions, the integration of the multiphase reaction module into a CO2 storage simulator, and simulation analysis using the developed simulator.

The postdoc in CO2plus will work on the phase behavior modeling of CO2 rich streams and the integration of developed models into simulation analysis.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in areas such as chemical engineering, chemistry, petroleum engineering, and mathematics.

Overall, we are specifically seeking candidates who have, or are willing quickly to acquire the following skills:

  • Phase equilibrium calculation algorithms and their integration into dynamic CO2 storage simulation
  • Thermodynamic modeling of phase equilibrium and thermophysical properties related to CO2-rich mixtures.

The candidates should possess strong programming skills. It is an advantage to be familiar with thermodynamics and dynamic simulation. Since CO2plus involves measurement of phase equilibrium and thermophysical properties, it facilitates the collaboration with others in the project if the postdoc in CO2plus has relevant experimental knowledge and experience.

Centre for Energy Resources Engineering (CERE) at DTU Chemistry is seeking talented PhD students to contribute to our exciting CO2 storage research in the following projects:

CompReact: Compositional simulation of reactive transport in CO2 storage

In this project, we aim to advance CO2 storage simulation technology by combining state-of-the-art equilibrium calculation algorithms with compositional simulation. We intend to take advantage of the recent development in simultaneous chemical and phase equilibrium calculation to improve the speed and reliability of CO2 storage simulation significantly. The candidates will work on integrating the novel chemical and phase equilibrium calculation algorithm into an in-house compositional simulator to simulate CO2 storage in both saline aquifers and depleted petroleum reservoirs.

DemoBECCS: The potential and demonstration feasibility of BECCS

Our third project aims to tackle bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), a CCS technology to achieve negative carbon emissions. The storage research in this project will focus on the challenges posed by the impurities from biogenic CO2 sources and the storage of biogenic CO2 in depleted oil reservoirs.

The CERE group at DTU Chemistry possesses extensive expertise in both experimental measurement and modelling of high-pressure phase equilibrium and thermophysical properties. Furthermore, the group excels in development of efficient phase equilibrium calculation algorithms for compositional simulations. All the projects are supported by robust consortia of industrial and academic partners, ensuring that the high-level research remains relevant and applicable in real-world contexts.

Responsibilities and qualifications

The CompReact project has one PhD position. The student will work on the improvement of the calculation algorithms for multiphase reactions, the integration of the multiphase reaction module into a CO2 storage simulator, and simulation analysis using the developed simulator.

The CO2plus project involves one PhD student focusing mainly on experimental measurement, and another PhD focusing on modeling and simulation.

DemoBECCS has one PhD position. The student will work on modeling and simulation of CO2 storage in depleted oil reservoirs.

For applicants to the PhD positions, you must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree in disciplines like chemical engineering, applied chemistry, or petroleum engineering.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education

  • Measurement of phase equilibrium and thermophysical properties

All the candidates, especially those focusing on simulation and modeling, should possess strong programming skills. It is an advantage to be familiar with thermodynamics and dynamic simulation.
