Shandong University School of Basic Medicine (BMS) is located in a cross-century garden, with its origin tracing back to the Medical Department of Qilu University, one of the sources of Western medicine education in modern China. There are over 260 faculty members in the school, including 3 Changjiang Scholars Program professors of the Ministry of Education, 6 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, as well as a group of energetic young scientists. BMS has three national and provincial laboratories including the Key Laboratory of Experimental Teratology of Ministry of Education, Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Basic and Clinical Psychiatric Disorders, and Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Infection and Immunology. Adhering to the orientation of scientific research and innovation, focusing on the research on the pathogenesis and intervention strategies of major diseases, five research centers have been formed, including oncology, neuroscience, immune microenvironment and diseases, metabolic diseases and genetic diseases. A “basic medical sciences subjects group” with an international advanced level has initially formed. At present, the college is actively planning the construction of new interdisciplinary majors. The biomedical science major was set up in 2019, and biomedical information related research directions are being prepared. In recent five years, BMS has undertaken more than 200 national scientific research projects, including over 20 national major and key projects and more than 200 provincial-level scientific research projects. Relevant achievements of the school have won more than ten awards, including the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of Natural Science of University Research Achievements of Ministry of Education, and Shandong Province Science and Technology Achievement Award. More than 900 SCI papers have been published, and the output of high-quality academic papers is increasing year by year.
Based on the basic research platform and the shared scientific research platform of the school, BMS owns a series of advanced equipment such as small animals living image, PET – CT, small animal imaging, analysis and sorting flow cytometry instrument, 200 kV field emission transmission electron microscopy, the two-photon microscope, laser confocal microscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry. The school also has functional platforms such as pathology, molecular biology, neurobehavioral analysis and electrophysiology. Besides, BMS is also equipped with an international advanced level of animal experiment center, providing advanced and complete scientific research environment for researchers.
