The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.
The postdoctoral fellows will work on research and development within the context of the EDF-funded Project “Federated Advanced Cyber physical Test range (FACT)”. There are a number of cyber test ranges available (including in Europe) but the federated approach and advanced cyber physical test range capability are two elements of the FACT project which makes it disruptive and unique. The focus on Operational Technology (OT) is increasing when it comes to military systems, and the cyber physical aspect is thus of greatest importance for the FACT project. Military platforms are not easily transferable to a relevant location for test. However, the federated approach in the FACT project will allow the physical part to be implemented at more than one location, and still make use of the full capability of the partners capabilities during the testing. To ensure that the equipment is used and has a required level of protection, the FACT project will design, prototype and demonstrate a federated cyber physical test capability which can be maintained and become a sustained capability to the European nations after the project. Our approach is fully user-centric, with the end-user’s needs as the starting point for the whole capability and every consideration. Examples of test scenario setups where the federated aspect of FACT is an advantage are numerous: larger partners wanting to cooperate in larger system deliveries, smaller companies cooperating with several partners within their complimentary field of expertise, sharing vulnerabilities and mitigating actions on equipment across partners and nations for shortening time to market.
The positions create an opportunity for more collaboration with other research disciplines such as security management, safety engineering, and policymaking in addition to the focus areas mentioned above.
The positions' working place is NTNU campus in Gjøvik. You will report to the Head of the Department.
Your immediate leader is the Head of the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology.
Duties of the position
The postdoctoral research fellows will:
- Contribute to research and development on:
- The definition of requirements and specifications for the development of the Federated Cyber Physical Range system.
- The design and development of the FACT building blocks.
- The integration of all FACT components into a single interoperable system.
- Testing and piloting activities of the CYBERUNITY platform
- The finalisation and development of the unified cyber range infrastructure and the building of a community of users and experts in relation to this platform.
- Contribute to the development of the communication and dissemination strategy of the FACT project.
- Develop and pursue own research agenda in cyber physical systems risk management.

Applications are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Biology programme. The position is available from February 2024 or later.
Title: Biochemistry of archaeal alkane oxidation
Research area and project description: The Research Group Archaea within the Department of Biology – Microbiology, investigates the ecophysiology and metabolism of deep-sea Archaea catalyzing the anaerobic oxidation of volatile alkanes like ethane, propane, and butane. Volatile alkanes are major constituents of natural gas with a major impact on carbon and energetic budgets of deep-sea marine sediments. Within this project we aim to understand the biochemical mechanism of alkane functionalization and further downstream processing into central metabolic pathways, along with the associated genes and enzymes. To achieve these objectives, the candidate will conduct physiology assays, incubations with stable isotope labeled substrates and precursors, and comparative metabolomics. Experiments will be done with cultures, concentrated cell suspensions, and cell extracts. Metabolomics analyses will be complemented by comparative genomics and proteomics for metabolic pathway reconstruction. We expect to uncover unprecedented biochemical reactions, to identify novel enzymes and genes, and to consolidate our understanding of archaeal alkane oxidation pathways, with further implications in metabolic pathways evolution.
For technical reasons, you must upload a project description. When - as here - you apply for a specific project, please simply copy the project description above, and upload it as a PDF in the application. If you wish to, you can indicate an URL where further information can be found.

European states (and Sweden) are working toward a sustainable intermittent renewable future. This green vision has brought about several important challenges. One of the major challenges is the increasing complexity in the Single Day-ahead Coupling (SDAC) model. First, the Market Time Unit (MTU) is planned to be reduced from 1 hour to 15 minutes. This roughly means an optimization model four times larger than what we have now. Second, the type and number of nonconvex orders are expected to increase by growing share of intermittent renewable generation. This in turn creates increasing complexity in calculating uniform prices. Third, Joint optimization of energy and balancing reserves in the day-ahead market which requires innovate algorithms to solve the SDAC model.
In this project we propose to study these three issues and to develop policies to address these concerns, with the ultimate aim of improving the performance of the SDAC model and smoothing the transition to the 100% renewable future. More Info

The ICTEAM institute of Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) and the STAR institute of Université de Liège (ULiège) are inviting applications for a joint PhD position in the field of atmospheric turbulence and adaptive optics. The context of this project relates to satellite-to-ground optical telecommunication links.
We seek excellent candidates with a strong background in physical and/or engineering sciences. A successful candidate must hold a Masters degree or equivalent by the starting date of the position. The successful candidate will develop new models of atmospheric turbulence for optical telecommunication receiving sites using meteorological simulations, and will then use these models to optimize the performance of an adaptive optics system, in an attempt to minimize the onboard power in telecommunication satellites, and to maximize the transfer rate and robustness of communications. The work will include both software simulation and on-sky demonstration, using our laser-guided adaptive optics facility SALTO, developed in partnership with the Belgian company AMOS.
The project will be carried out under the joint supervision of Prof Claude Oestges (UCLouvain) and Dr Olivier Absil (ULiège). The fellowship is not restricted by nationality. PhD students at UCLouvain / ULiège are funded for four years (contingent upon satisfactory progress), earn competitive salaries, and are eligible for social security benefits.
Applicants should send a CV, transcripts of study records (with grades), and a brief statement of past research and research interests to Prof Oestges (claude.oestges@uclouvain.be) and Dr Absil (olivier.absil@uliege.be). Applications will be accepted until the position is filled, with a target starting date as soon as possible.
