NTNU is a broad-based university with a technical-scientific profile and a focus in professional education. The university is located in three cities with headquarters in Trondheim.

At NTNU, 9,000 employees and 43,000 students work to create knowledge for a better world.

You will find more information about working at NTNU and the application process here.

About the job

With the European Union setting the ambitious goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050, and many other countries embracing similar policies to decarbonize electricity, supporting a more sustainable society, there is a significant need for technological advances and increased competitiveness to drive the growth of offshore renewable energies, and energy storage in the coming years.

Within this context, this PhD project will focus specifically on investigating how to ensure that large amounts of offshore wind energy can be integrated into the electric grid without jeopardizing its stability due to resonance phenomena and harmonic interactions.

The PhD Candidate will be employed at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the workplace will be in Trondheim, Norway, but the PhD-project is of both academic and industrial relevance, and it will therefore be developed in close cooperation between NTNU in Trondheim and the company Petronas, which is a global Malaysian energy group.

Your immediate leader is the Head of Department.

Duties of the position

The objective of the PhD education is to qualify for scientific research of high international standard. The PhD education has a nominal duration of three years of full-time study and includes required coursework or similar academic training comprising a minimum of 30 credits. The most important component of the PhD education is an independent scientific research project carried out under academic supervision, which results in the PhD thesis. The PhD degree is conferred based on these two elements and the doctoral examination, which consists of a trial lecture and a public defense of the scientific thesis.

In the scientific research project, the PhD candidate will investigate the risks in terms of harmonic resonances/harmonic instability which may arise from the increase in power level and distance from shore of wind turbines (as well as PV farms) with ac collection systems, and how they depend on the operating conditions of the farm.

Among the specific objectives of the PhD project there are:

  • To identify a realistic use-case (baseline case) for a large offshore wind park (or possibly PV plant) with ac collection grid.
  • To model the identified test case in MATLAB or DIgSILENT to replicate the problem, in such a way that it is possible to parameterize turbine type (Type 3 or Type 4) or PV, network with varying grid strength, short circuit ratio, etc.
  • Validate various operating modes of the wind farm (e.g., constant PQ mode, voltage/frequency support mode or grid forming mode) against the baseline test case.
  • Capture harmonic resonance and stability issues depending on number of wind turbines (or PV panels) in operation, wind speed (or solar irradiation), cable length, converter topology and control, etc. both theoretically and by simulations.
  • Identify critical parameters for resonance/instability.

Required selection criteria

Applicants must hold an M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) within electrical engineering with a specialization or solid competence in dynamic modeling of electric power systems.

  • Good knowledge of the basics of power electronics and power systems is needed.

The Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language (BCBL) in San Sebastián (Basque Country, Spain) is offering a 4-year funded PhD opportunity.

Job description: The PhD student will work on the SIGNifica projectfunded by the Spanish Ministry of  Science and Innovation, examining the lexical semantics of Spanish Sign Language (LSE). This project aims to collect free association norms for LSE to map the semantics of the LSE lexicon. The data will be used to create a network that characterizes how different meanings are interconnected, and to quantify semantic properties such as entropy, semantic neighborhood density and clustering. In addition, we will use this dataset to investigate how the intersection of form (phonology) and meaning (semantics) gives rise to systematicity and iconicity in the sign lexicon. This project involves a collaboration with the ASL-LEX developers (at Boston University and SDSU, California) and will involve cross-linguistic comparisons between LSE, ASL, Spanish and English. This project continues a broader line of research into the lexicon of Spanish Sign Language, an understudied language, and will provide valuable insight into the way that modality shapes how language is structured and processed by the human mind.

The selected candidate will play a central role in the project and will be involved in collecting and curating a large dataset of semantic associations from deaf LSE signers (via an on-line platform), exploiting existing language resources and performing computational analysis using network theory. The candidate will develop advanced technical and analytical skills and will also have the opportunity to develop experiments into sign language/LSE processing under the supervision and guidance of the PI. We encourage applications from Deaf candidates.

PI and research group: The candidate will be supervised by Dr. Brendan Costello (b.costello@bcbl.eu), and will form part of the sign language and deafness research team, which has developed resources such as a lexical database of LSE and a motion capture system for characterizing sign production. We use these resources together with a variety of behavioral and neuroimaging techniques to investigate how the sign language lexicon is structured and represented cognitively. Sign languages offer unique insight into how language can operate in a different modality and, more generally, how modality affects language structure and processing. This work contributes to understanding the cognitive foundations of deaf individuals’ language use and development, and also to broadening our understanding of language per se. The team is part of the Neurobiology of Language research group led by Prof. Manuel Carreiras (m.carreiras@bcbl.eu).

Postdoc in Digital Society and Trust-Project with Emphasis on Trust Relations on Travel Platforms such as Airbnb and Couchsurfer

The Department of Communication and Arts (DCA), Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as postdoc from February 1. 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as postdoc is full-time and limited until October 15, 2025. The purpose of the postdoc is to study citizens’ trust in relation to digitalization of governmental services within the auspices of the research project Digital Society and Trust (DIS-TRUST) funded by the Velux Foundation.

The Project

The DIS-TRUST project investigates how conditions for interpersonal trust and trust in institutions change in the digital society, how new forms of trust are formed, and what challenges digitalization poses to trust. The project originates in philosophy’s conceptual work with trust and digitalization. The constant digital transformations of social life worlds are studied conceptually and by confronting the conceptual analyses with concrete context embedded case studies. Consequently, DIS-TRUST advances and matures its analyses of trust oscillating within the poles of qualitative empirical research and philosophical conceptual theories. A short description of the project can be found here: https://veluxfoundations.dk/da/kernegruppebevillinger-2023.

The specific research project of the postdoc concerns building of trust relations on travel platforms such as Airbnb and Couchsurfer. Online marketplaces for accommodation are dependent on trust being established to secure a commercially viable platform. The successful exchange between homeowners and visitors rests on trust emerging in this human-technology exchange shaping encounters and interactions in a manner that users and the media technologies themselves become mutually constitutive. The postdoc is expected to analyze how the affordances of the platforms facilitate some trust relations and complicate others. How are features such as personal profile and ratings, pictures and digital as well as analogue communication building trust? What role do the platforms play in mediating trust between homeowners and visitors?

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD or the equivalent thereof within social media studies, science and technology studies, information technology, philosophy or an adjacent field in the humanities, social sciences or data sciences.

The ideal candidate is an excellent scholar with expertise in digital platforms, information technology, modern philosophies of trust or digital media studies. The ideal candidate has familiarized her/himself with the intersection between philosophy’s conceptual approach and qualitative empirical research and is enthusiastic about doing research in the methodological meeting of theoretical and empirical qualitative analysis. While prior experience with empirical studies such as digital multimedia studies, fieldwork or qualitative interviews is an asset, it is not required. Candidates without prior experience with qualitative empirical work must describe how the candidate would conceive and carry out the empirical studies. Knowledge of contemporary philosophical research in trust and digitalization, platform economies and digital mediation is an asset. Candidates without such knowledge are expected to describe how they will acquaint themselves with these perspectives.

Applicants must master spoken and written English at an advanced academic level. Experience of publishing in English will be an asset. For this position fluency in Danish is an asset but not a requirement.

The applicant is furthermore expected to demonstrate:

  • Experience with/willingness to organize and conduct research seminars including follow-up evaluations.
  • An international research-profile including experience of international publication and research dissemination.
  • Plans for public dissemination of the conducted research.

Responsibilities and tasks

The ideal candidate shall be enterprising and possess good communication skills, be visible and involved in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers from the DIS-TRUST-project and across the department.

The candidate is expected to:

  • Be an active collaborative partner in the research project.
  • Conduct and complete an independent research project in collaboration with the group.
  • Plan and undertake a shorter international research stay.
  • Publish independently and in collaboration with the research PI and core group in relevant peer reviewed journals and contribute to the planned co-authored monography Trust in the Digital Age.
